Should I get a Fatboy?

There's a Fatboy for sale over at the BST (hmm maybe I shouldn't publicize this lest it's gone! oh well...). PM'd the seller. Decent price, pretty good condition. I've always wanted a Fatboy, I just love the looks of the dang thing BUT....

now I'm suffering from cognitive dissonance (even before buying it, imagine that!). Reason being...

I use a Tech and I absolutely LOVE the low profile head. I have a pretty intricate Van Dyke going on an even with my old TTO butterfly razors it was always hit or miss. Sometimes I made mistakes so bad I had to shave off the whole damn thing!

The Tech is the first razor that allows me to really see where I'm shaving. I'm worried that the Fatboy's head would be too big as some have said.

Will it be a problem? Is the head bigger than other Gillette TTOs like the Super Speed? Or is the bulkiness something I could get used to? I'm a little worried about getting used to it, cuz I've shaved with TTOs for the past few years and even without lather (just shaved with water) sometimes I get big problems lining up my Van Dyke properly.

BUT i love the adjustability of a Fatboy and I LOVE the way it looks!!! Wait I said that already right? HAhaha!

Maybe a Slim would have a head closer to your Tech? I'm going to try a Fat Boy in a couple of days. I don't think the head size will be an issue for me. It looks pretty small compared to a 1912.

Well, if you don't like it, it's not as if it will be hard to find a new home for it! Try it out and if you don't like it, put it away for 6 months and try again. If you still don't like it, BST it.

You could always shave with the Fatboy and use the Tech for the edges if you can't get the right edge down with the Fatboy.

I have a goatee and haven't had a problem shaving the right line with a Flare Tip, DE89L, or Red Tip so far. I have a Fatboy but I haven't used it yet. I think after a few uses you should be able to find the edge and make it work for you.

Maneuverability could be an issue, but as it's been said, finding a new home for it should not be hard. And they really are fun to use.....

i've really gotten to like the merkur 23c and 38 blue. fatboy does good, it's just not me i guess. some brassing but works perfectly. i'd say use it and enjoy! you'll soon discover if it's a favorite or not. either way, it's nice just having one!

Every DE shaver should have one, you only need one,any sane person should have one.
Just one.
Why I have six fatboys is beyond my comprehension:(

The Fat boy is Miles Ahead of other razors. They are Giant Steps of improvement. Definitely one of the Milestones of shaving. 'Round About Midnight you'll be Kind of Blue if you miss out.

The logical conclusion is that you are not sane. I suspect that puts you right in line with most of us on these forums.

Gents! Many thanks for your wise words of advice! I've already sent 40boy my Paypal funds so no more racing to the best rdh1223! I won hahah! But don't worry if it doesn't work out for me I'll send it to you =)

It could even be "Seven Steps to Heaven"

Gents! That was brilliance!!

Miles' fans as well I presume?

Thanks to your inspired words I've layed down the funds to get the Fatboy!

Will report back!

Hi there,

That Tech is a good razor. I agree with you about it being nice to view things well during the shave, and I guess it's something you'd especially need. Yeah, practicing facial topiary would work best with a tool that didn't obstruct your vision.

The fatboy has a more rounded head, and the profile is (as you mentioned) a bit bulkier than a Tech. You won't get quite the same amount of control with a fatboy when it comes to doing the real exacting shaping work. Best thing for that would be a later model injector or maybe a Sensor. Those both have very thin profiles and offer almost unobstructed viewing during the shave.

You should try a fatboy and see what's up. I found the head design to be different from every other razor I've used over the years, and it's something you have to see for yourself if it's a good fit or not. Also, this razor can sometimes change the way certain blades will perform.

It won't shave like a slim or super adjustable, and will definitely be a change from a Tech. The fatboy has it's own personality, and you either love it or you don't. Lots of people 'like' the fatboy, but to some it's considered their perfect razor. I would be included in that group.

Hope that helps somehow,

Martin

You'll love the fatboy.... In fact you'll love it so much you'll eventually get a Slim to keep it company.

(...the slim head is also more compact and maneuverable.... )

Allow me to be the first naysayer.

I bought a Fatboy and absolutely hated it :thumbdown
The head is so thick that I had trouble shaving underneath my nose and it was just too gawky.

I find Old Type, NEW and Super Speed razors to be MILES ahead of the Fatboy despite all it's hype.
My FB went on the BST as quick as I could get it there and I have never missed it for one second.

And allow me to be the second naysayer.

I have a heck of a time shaving with a Fatboy. I haul it out from time to time with refreshed optimism after reading a thread promoting them - but, it doesn't fit either my style or face. Dunno.

But, they are very nice examples of quality razor making and I would never, ever get rid of mine. (I just won't shave with em!) And, I have a case coming soon to pop my FB into - quite exciting!!

No not after I sent my pay pal dollars! Hahah! Will report once I get it, even ifmit doesn't work out I'll either have a really nice razor to look at or someone on the BST will be a very happy camper. Kinda reminds me of Alfa Romeos.....
