Hello there - I`m Johnny from Manchester NW England - I`ve been shaving since `78 - mostly cheapie BIC disposables, Gillette GII`s, a Braun battery foil and a 2-head battery Phillishave from the 80`s and 90`s.
I used antique straights in Israel and Egypt - sometimes with no water in the West Bank and Hurghada- used veg oil and booze - stropped with toothpaste on a leather belt.
Then I got sick of disposables and expensive supermarket cartridge junk and went back to DE safety razors.
I`m a Russian and can shave with anything - drunk or sober but lately I`ve got some treats for myself - Treet Black carbons which go rusty if not on top of a rad after to dry thoroughly - in piccy and I have some Lieres carbons as well.
I`m old fashioned - I love carbon knives and scissors as well - especially artisanal English or Japanese - I love med preps and Feathers but today I shaved with a Chinese no brand razor with a no brand blade - no writing on them anywhere but, however there was one redeeming feature - a stainless Yaqi best of both head - it`s the short blue handled one - 6th from the left.
The black head one 3rd from left with solid brass handle is another Yaqi best of both - closed and open comb on one head.
The 4th one from the left is a Chinese DScosmetic titanium handle with A Yaqi scalloped head.
The 5th one in from the left is a 4 piece 1930`s German brass/Stainless travel razor that bends and tensions the blade - only 40 grams that goes in the velvet lined square box to the far right.
The first one on the left is a cheapie with a S/S scalloped head and the one on the far right is a English vintage aluminium Gillette tech travel razor that goes in the bakelite box.
I like shaving butter and shaving oil and whipped soap but I can shave with washing up liquid, shampoo, conditioner, washing powder - anything if I have to - I was a poor student in the eighties and I`ve lived in a war zone so I`m not fussy and neither is my skin - thank goodness.
I swap heads because most of them are 5mm threads and interchangeable but I can use very mild or very aggressive razors - no problem.
I have a couple of Chinese adjustables which are great but the head is a bit chunky for under the nose haha !
At my age I don`t think my face is worth expensive razors and soaps - the colourful whipped soaps were gifts and the Poraso soaps were gifts.
I also stock up on Lord rainbow blades because they remind me of Alexandria and Cairo with my pet lizard on the wall and they`re cheap as chips
I don`t use a mirror or a shaving brush and can literally do it by feel - I love shaving in the dark or with my eyes closed in the bath but I have joined this forum to learn because I know nothing about brands or reputations.I have some travel kits too - you`ll burst out laughing at my junk - but I don`t care !
The vast majority of my stuff is second-hand or budget and frankly I can get jolly good results from them but I would like to try some proper shaving gear because I never did it before and would like an easier life if poss.

Thank you for the thumbs up Alum Ladd - there is in fact alum in my post - it`s the 2nd piccy down white stuff in the grey titanium round tin - handy for cuts and an astringent - I don`t get cut very often - my friendly dragon uses it on her legs !

Johnny! Welcome. I’m new here too. I bet you have a lot to teach folks and have great stories. I hope you get what you need here and enjoy the interaction
Thanks a million for the warm welcome Kastriheartburn - long story short - lived all over - zigged and zagged for my careers.
Love N Africa, Bermuda and the Med - I like it 107 at midnight - but I`ve lived in Haugsund - Norway, Shetlands, Newcastle etc - I just walked faster there to keep warm!

You`ll have to excuse me - I`m a bit of a caveman and old hippy party animal - but my Mother trained me to be a gentleman.
I`m not OCD or too fastidious - I can shave with an antique straight in the dark - drunk - no choice in a war zone with no electricity or water !
I play my tenor sax drunk on Moscow mules or White Russians with my eyes shut as well !
The sax in the garden is on Bob the iron scarecrow - he has ears ,a full three piece suite, arms and legs and chain hair !
The baby oak is growing up fast these days !

I've been curious about the whipped shaving cream. Looking through Etsy there are a lot of choices. I currently use Boellis Panama, Saponificio Varesino, and Sudsy Soapery. Is there any chance the whipped stuff can provide the performance anywhere close to those? Thanks.

To be perfectly frank Eben stone - I`ve not used it yet - it was a gift and so was the Proraso soap.
Like yesterday I had a shave in the kitch with no mirror - no brush - no preshave using some neolithic Imperial Leather.

I used the Imp soap from my big green washing up ashtray !

But saying that I`m a trained medical herbalist for 35 years so I can make it myself if pushed for Christmas presents - I have a bluetooth still I can control from Spain if need be !

I used something called a Yaqi best of both head the other day - what a revelation - I don`t mind mild or aggressive razors - I can wangle the angle.
Compared to an antique sub par straight - all DE`s and shavettes are mild to me - probably because I forged knives in China and Yorkshire and can sharpen anything - doing drill-bits with an angle grinder - on Carlsberg Special Brew - no comment about Health and Safety - that`s just for normal people !

Thanks Eric_75 and Dave himself - I`ve been called eccentric which I take as a complement - just life skills and tools because I have a crazy family - crazy bosses and crazy body and definitely a crazy mind because a psychiatrist declared me sane and didn`t section me after I did insane things to myself.
I interviewed my bosses to make sure they were alcoholics as well so I wouldn`t get sacked and we could go to the pub together - I don`t think that`s mad - I think it`s pragmatic - but I could be wrong.

Welcome aboard! Looks like you will fit in well around these parts!
Thanks Ravenonrock and BigJ ; erm I`ve always had hobbies ; some which turned into careers and I collect allsorts.
I got into shaving tackle because it takes up less room than kitchen knives, `puters, scissors, books and music - I have all but finished hoarding those because my 3 bed house is only tiny and there`s no more room !
I must put the brakes on rapido !
Now I have a few razors, some aftershave, soap and blades I`m nearly done !
I already got 40 Imperial Leather soaps dropped off by DPD today and just got a new green razor arriving today from Amazon and some good S/H razors and vintage aftershave are landing next week - that`s all haha !

Welcome from Michigan. I visited Manchester when I was 17, and had a great time there. Don't sell yourself short. That's a cool collection of stuff you've got there.
Thanks helicopter - I`ve got bloody plenty of shaving whatsits and thingies now !

The thing is I`m nearly 60, got wonky bones, hammered liver and lungs and the damage is done so...

I don`t really need anymore `cos I`m not gonna able to use it all before I go go - lol !

I`ve just got one Yaqi rose gold effort for the dragon`s legs coming next week and a Gillette Tech travel kit landing soon.

Don`t laugh too hard !

It`s described as Yaqi Rosegold Color Brass Heavy Handle Safety Razor for Lady - model - RARG1919 - weighs 83 grams.
Handle is solid brass and head is zamac - both ceramic coated copper colour !
I think it`s pretty and good value.
My GF uses my mild razors and I might take this on a test drive when it comes.
