Shorts

I very rarely wear shorts unless I'm jogging. I'm not morally opposed to shorts, I just have a difficult time finding a pair that look good on me. The weather is heating up in North America, and I'm ready to look for something a little cooler. What shorts do you like? How long of an inseam do you get? What do you think about Madras or other patterns?

I love shorts especially bright color madras. If you're tall, you can get away with the shorts an inch above your knees. Short guys (or long torso, short legs like me) keep them right at the knees, too low and they look like high-waters. If you're going with loud short patterns, use solid colored shirts. You also need a pair of good fitting khaki shorts, it's mandatory. I love to pair these with my Top-Siders.

I like tan linen shorts. About 3/4 thigh length is good for me. (You want to avoid anything hinting of "short-shorts", and anything that might come close to obscuring the knee.)

What problems do you have?

If you tell us more about this, maybe we can suggest specific things to look for to help with that.

In Scotland it's never really hot enough to need shorts, well maybe one day in 500, so this was one article of clothing I never owned. I now have 3 pairs. I found my very nice "colonial shorts" suffered from the same problem that many cotton garments present in hot weather- obvious patching from perspiration which takes hours to evaporate. I now stick with basketballl-type shorts which almost never look wet. I don't care how nice shorts are if they develop a huge dark spot on your butt after sitting on a hot bus for 25 mins.

My favorite shorts are my Brooks Brothers madras:

I also have other brands of shorts which include: pale yellow solid, green solid, khaki, and blue chambray. I don't like long shorts so the short inseams are fine for me. Key is to never tuck anything in with shorts. T-shirts, polos, and sports shirts should be left out unless you're on the golf course.

I pretty much live in shorts ... If I'm not at work or some kind of formal affair ... all cotton Cargos ... the pockets come in handy.

Personally, I have had all my shorts tailored to about 1" - 1.5" inches above the knee. It lengthens the legs (which is needed) and just feels better than those that end at or just below the knee

Nice guide but I have to disagree with him when he says:

"T-shirts and shorts is a look that flatters no one. It may be appropriate in casual settings, but it’s not going to make you look as good as other options."

Shorts are supposed to be worn in casual settings anways so I don't see his point there.

I think that the point is that a tee shirt / shorts combo is socially acceptable, but you will not have the polished look of a person wearing a nice polo or short sleeve button down.

I see the point, but it really is situational dressing; coming off the beach the tee shirt/shorts are fine, being out for the evening they would be acceptable, but not as put together

The Art of Manliness article seems to treat shorts a form of nakedness. It goes way too far. So much of this sort of advice is based on assumptions of activity and climate, not to mention social class. If you're going for afternoon tea in Raffles this advice is sound; hanging out at The Edinburgh Festival on a 10 hour ubertrek or walking down Bourbon St is a different story. Semi-capri cargos are de rigeur while travelling in Thailand etc and very useful- something you can go to a pub in at night, and jump into a river in the afternoon. The AoM suggestions are totally useless in this context and ruined within hours.
I also feel that often if you see somebody who is "obeying the rules" it can look like their lifestyle and mindset is quite limited. There is a way of juggling looks and genres (I haven't quite mastered it yet) which I feel shows a man to have an expansive and supple outlook.

+1 (I like this guide)

I never wear shorts except at the beach/pool. Just personal preference as living in a hot desert climate I find long sleeves/pants cooler. As for T-shirts, they were regulated to my pajama drawer years ago. :)
