Shaving in the Shower

This is my first post (outside of the Hall of Fame introduction), and I am excited to be here. I am very new to all this and have just ordered a set of 4 vintage Gillette DE razors off of eBay for $30. From the pictures I saw here on B&B they appear to be a 40s style super speed, a 50/60s style SS, a black handled SS, and an old gold colored one with a ball on the bottom. I also ordered the complete sampler pack of blades from West Coast Shave. I can't wait to get started.

I have never used a DE, but I use an AoS badger brush and unscented shave cream. For the last few years I have been shaving in the shower exclusively. I like it because:
  1. It is time-efficient, and I like to sleep in as late as possible:001_tongu
  2. It gets my beard really wet and hot
  3. The steam seems to help soften my beard
  4. Clean up and rinse off is a breeze

Anyway, I was wondering if, once I start wet shaving, is there any reason not to shave in the shower.

Thanks,
Ray

Hi Ray, welcome to B&B!

Sounds like a pretty good score from the bay. Super Speeds are nice razors

I used to shave in the shower (with a cartridge) but I find I get a better shave when I'm looking in the mirror

Re. time in bed...shave at night, then you can get even more rack time!

I find that a shower is just one step in a good prep routine.

Hi, Ray -- Welcome to B&B.

If you don't have a mirror in the shower already, I'd suggest getting one to start with DE. Other than that, you can just switch out the cartidge razor and keep all the rest the same.

I find that a shower is just one step in a good prep routine.

My beard grows pretty fast, I could probably shave twice a day, so I'm not sure shaving at night is an option for me.

I was a shower shaver before converting to DE...I tried my first few shaves in the shower, but found that with the increased time needed to get a proper shave I would start to run out of hot water...no fun shaving with cold water so I started shaving after my shower. I find that I get a better shave this way as I can properly prep and take advantage of things like hot water from the tea pot to make my lather and rinse my razor.

I have always shaved in the shower. A mirror is helpful when you start shaving in the shower with a DE, but you'll eventually find that it's completely unnecessary. A DE shave in the shower is just more relaxation/meditation time in the morning before I have to tackle the work day.

Give it a go and see how it works for you. Personally, I like to take my time in front of the mirror.

Welcome to B&B!
