Sandalwood

I really enjoy the Art of Shavings Sandalwood shave cream and rediscovered its great smell after using some after shave balm last night. My question is, What does true Sandalwood smell like? Does it smell like AOS? Or is there a better shave cream out there?

Best,
Jerry

I love T&H Sandalwood, but I don't think it would be considered a "true" sandalwood... some other stuff mixed in there. It's definitely a woodsy scent though. I used the balm today. I'd say it's sweeter than AOS, with a cedar kick.

TOBS Sandalwood on the other hand? Doesn't smell like sandalwood at all IMO. It's kind of a generic perfumey scent to me. Some guys like it a lot though.

I have AoS's cream. It smells good and works well. But if you want a better cream that truly smells of real sandalwood, look no further than QCS's Mysore Sandalwood cream.

Seriously. You can't go wrong. :thumbup1:

Funny, swap the products and you have my opinion on those two. :001_smile I haven't smelled real sandalwood, but T&H does smell of cheap perfume, or disinfectant. TOBS on the other hand, smells like tree bark in the tub. I don't like any of them, but that's not the point.

As I said, I haven't smelled real sandalwood. But Edwin Jagger/Mühle sandalwood has a scent that is out of this world. Whatever it smells like, it is amazing.

My opinion is that the new Proraso Red has a scent that is very close to what true Sandalwood smells like.

I just ordered a tube of the new Proraso Sandalwood, so I can't comment on it yet.

When it comes to Sandalwood, I've tried: TOBS, Trumpers', AoS, and T&H. What can I say, SWMBO loves Sandalwood.
Was not too crazy about Trumpers, and I agree that T&H--although it performs well--is not a "true" sandalwood scent. There is definitely some ceder in there or something.
TOBS, to me, smells like leather.
On the whole, AoS is my favourite.

My SWMBO recently got me the TOBS Sandalwood Shaving Cream & I love the scent as it fills the air while shaving. Also my SWMBO loves the scent immensely.

Having never smelled the QCS Mysore Sandalwood cream, my vote would go to the new Proraso Red. That's pretty much straight up "the real thing"

Can't say I've actually smelled real sandalwood, but I do enjoy the EJ Sandalwood cream/AS. It has an odd scent, at first. Kind of medicinal. But after it absorbs and you start going about your day, the smell is mild, but nice.

Apparently Sandalwood is in a bit of short supply according to the manager of a shop that sells Sandalwood essential oil. This may just be his supplier, but he seemed to believe there was an overall shortage. The EO, when in stock, is pretty spendy. Thinking this would be "true" sandalwood aroma and a nice benchmark.
I, too, am enamored of the intoxicating aroma that is sandalwood. The T&H sandalwood sample I tried was wonderful. TOB tub I really like and (strangely and probably due to strength of aroma) prefer over the new Proraso red (I know.. I'm a heretic!).
I purchased some Mysore sandalwood soap and WOW does it fill the shower with scent! Not sure I love it, but it's got some oomph. Just leaving it in the bathroom perfumes the area. I also purchased some Caswell & Massey sandalwood soap for my wife in the other bathroom. Much subtler but she likes it.
Just my two cents.

Same thing by my local specialty store. They had it available for purchase yet it was $80 for the smallest amount I believe? Ridiculously expensive. I would venture to guess that most soaps are probably using synthetic which may smell like Sandalwood but I guess would not be "true" as stated above.

+1 QCS Mysore is fantastic.

The QCS is really nice and from what I have read close to real sandalwood, but I am far from knowledgeable on sandalwood's true smell. I truly like TOBS and so does SWMBO whether or not it is even close to sandalwood. I have the cream, AS gel and cologne, great stuff IMO.

I have several essential oils, and even some sandalwood wood chips at home (20 years old, still very aromatic). AOS is the closest I've found so far. Still waiting to get my Proraso Red, ordered on ebay about 5 weeks ago, still nothing :(
