Sandals With Slacks - Yes?? No???

Rather than Jack a different thread, and considering this one is sandal related, but a different subject, I thought I'd start a new one.

Evenings at the resorts in Cuba we frequent, men usually wear slacks and a dress or casual shirt of some sort.

Many of them wear sandals (open or closed toe) and normally no socks.

Personally, I think open-toed sandals with slacks looks pathetic, but I'm willing to listen to other views and see if it's just me. I might even change my mind if enough people tell me I have my head up my a** with this view.

So, what say ye?? Am I right, or am I wrong to think the way I do?

Also, while on the subject of footwear, what is it about Crocs so many people hate? Personally, I think they're the most comfortable and convenient thing possible to wear on a beach. Again, looking for other people's views.

Thanks in advance for replying!!!

I think you could probably pull it off in a tropical country. If you do not live in the tropics then Hell NO

Crocs and UGG boots are ugly plain and simple. I have a pair of crocks that I wear in the yard, or around the house, but I do not go out in public in them.

Also NO SOCKS WITH SANDALS!

It doesn't look the best, but if it's warm and you can pull it off, why not? My college geology professor wore sandals with slacks all the time and it suited him quite well.

With jeans or khakis, maybe, depending on the sandal. Otherwise, no way. And NEVER socks with sandals.

edit: and crocs are an abomination at least as bad as black socks with sandals and shorts.

I remember having dinner in Miami sometime in the 90's and seeing Latino men dressed in suits, no tie, wearing closed toe sandals.

I think it's fine with casual chinos or non-dressy khakis as long as the sandals are leather, but I'd never wear sandals with dressier slacks or a suit.

EDIT: And +1 for no socks!

Definitely wear slacks with sandals. But it is important to wear a pair of socks with the sandals when wearing slacks. The socks will absorb perspiration and keep your feet cleaner and will add to your comfort than if you were wearing no socks. It will also make you look sharper with socks. If you have sandals without socks with a pair of slacks it will make you look like a beach bum. You can co-ordinate the color of the socks you want to wear with the shirt and slacks.

Cheers.

This is a joke, right?

This is no joke. For evening attire if I wear sandals with a sport shirt and slacks I wear socks with the sandals. It just makes it better. If you go into Air Conditioning and have no socks on in the evening....you will feel the cold fast. If you don't wear socks with sandals and slacks the first thing that will grab everyone's attention will be your feet. I also wear socks with sandal/shoes and find it very comfortable.

Sandals with trousers? Why not? But it is a YMMV kind of thing. You could say that it's fine so long as you are in a tropical country or you're at the beach. But that certainly isn't true for everyone. On the other hand, there are guys that could wear it anywhere. It's all about élan.

Depends on the sandals and the slacks, if you are on a resort or you are out for a night on the town in the middle of the Summer, I would go with leather closed toe fisherman sandals (without socks of course) with either linen pants, chinos or denim.

It all depends on local customs as some places are just more casual than others. In Cuba, sandals with slacks might be the norm more often than not. If I lived in a tropical climate, socks and dress shoes would likely be worn very little.

Agreed on all fronts. From my own point of view, sandals with pants on a man is pretty ugly, unless the pants are short (stopping around the top of the ankle) and you're on the beach. If it's hot enough to have sandals, it's hot enough for shorts. If you absolutely must wear pants, find some high-quality socks (Coolmax, Underarmor) and breathable closed shoes.

Dinner dress code at some places requires it. While some do wear shorts at the restaurants, I would feel more out of place wearing shorts against rules in place than I would with sandals with pants.
