Red Tip Overrated?

Anybody else here think the Gillette Red Tip Super Speed is vastly overrated? I mean, have you seen what prices are doing on the bay recently? I can't stand mine! We should warn all the newbs about how bad they are.

Chuck Norris affects the price of Red Tips and just razor values in general :kyle1:

Agreed. I've got three red tips that perform so poorly that I should PIF them all just to get them out of the house.

Has to be the worst razor ever made in the history of the world. They should all be destroyed.

I see what you did there. hehe

Surprisingly, the hype surrounding the Red Tip hasn't effected me the least bit. I have no strong desire to buy a Red Tip and since I prefer mild shavers like the Tech the likelyhood it'll happen are close to zero. so you Red Tip fanatics are safe ;)

I think the red tip is a good razor but yes, overrated. If I stay in the same category, I prefer a regular superspeed.

What if Gillette had chosen another color? Canary Yellow? Grapefruit? Lime Green?

I think the Fuchsia Tip would not get the press that the Red Tip gets.

I recently got a beater red tip and cleaned it up. It wasn't even a good buy at $7.99 plus shipping, even with the other three razors in the lot.

I tried it with a Feather and it was awful! Quite a few weepers on my way to BBS.:death:

I think there are a couple of things going on here. One, they are really cool looking. Two, there are alot of folks getting into DE shaving lately. They come here, and read posts and decide they just have to have a Red Tip. The prices get driven up as a result. Not only are true wet shaver enthusiasts visiting this site, but others as well. Take a look here.

Mmm nice to know people are buying these razors and whacking a few dollars more on them:mad3:

I have no idea why I just procured one.....nor why I am gonna use it tomorrow for the first time. I will take all the advice in this thread an post it up on the bay for some psychotic price that someone will surely bid on.

That said.... you can do the same with an adjustable, without the markup and the inadvertant collector/pokemans factor.

Horrible, horrible razor. What's even more horrible, is that I didn't pick one up at the beginning of Sept. (Yep, just three weeks ago!) back when I started my little collection. Prices on these have soared in that time.

Now I'm going to have to shop well, seek a beater, a poor picture, buy one in a lot, find a misspelled auction title or one that is poorly written or ends at an inopportune time to get a decent deal on one . (<--- Newbie hint: Valuable eBay tricks inside!)

Yes it is, terrible razor.

My father used a red tip for 30 years. He stopped using it when his arthritis got too bad and went to an electric. That just about killed him since he had a heavy beard and loved BBS shaves. The red tip wasn't among his things when he passed away some years ago so he must have thrown it out.

It was the razor I used for my very first shave . I made the discovery that there was another use for toilet paper besides the usual. My father bought me a normal black handle SS and I used that for 10 years until I got caught up in Gillette's marketing and kept adding blades over the next decades.

I've finally come to my senses and come back to DE shaving. I'm using a '54 SS and a NEW right now until I get my technique down. I just picked up a good shaving condition red tip off ebay for $10. Buy It Now and am looking forward to trying it. The toilet paper will be close by.
