Razor From Expired Gillette Patent?

Has anyone seen this? According to the description, it is a DE razor built on an expired 1934 Gillette patent design. It costs $7.99 and comes in a nice box if the picture is to be believed, and shipping is free.

A reproduction (probably in looks more than mechanics) Gillette for $8. Tell me if this is old news, and is it worth it for $8.

Sorry if I'm behind the curve. The seller has a 100% satisfaction rating, and from the comments it looks like he's sold a ton of these.

That is a Weishi Chinese razor.

I don't care for them, they are milder than a Tech, and the build quality is not so good.

Some folks here seem to like them, but when you can get an ACTUAL Gillette Superspeed for not much more than this cheap copy, why wouldn't you?

It is a cheap copy, not built to the same standards at all.
If it's the same listing I'm thinking of, the title treads very close to the line (if not over it) as far as violating eBay's keyword spamming policy.
He has also searched the world, apparently missing the glut of super speeds at reasonable prices on eBay.

Probably has a 100% rating because he ships quickly and/or packages the razors well, and most customers would have rated him based on that before they've had a chance to use the razor.

I had one of these, passed it on as it was to mild for my liking, and it felt as the price is, cheap, not a long term razor.

I have one. It's not so terrible and it's not a great piece of engineering. Very good for a starter razor and as a travel piece, you won't scream and curse if it gets lost.

I gave one to my thick-bearded friend/housemate. He doesn't want to think of another razor. Ever. But he's, er, peculiar, to say the least. One day, I'll show him my 34C and we'll see what song he sings then.

Now THAT'S an endorsement!

"The New Weishi Razor - Preferred by more Peculiar Housemates than any other DE available."

If only you knew how hard I work at thinking up this drek!

Weishi clone :w00t:

Not to let the thread get into Weishi bashing, but this is most likely a Vincent razor or a new brand. Indication it is not a Weishi:

  • The interior of the case has a white/yellow plastic insert to hold the razor. Weishi has molded plastic arms that cradle the razor
  • Right above the knurling, the handle angles in at ~45 degrees towards the stem and head. Weishi's have a wide groove above the knurling.
  • Weishi's have 17 knurls or ridges on the handle. This has 11.
  • Vincent and other "Weishi knockoffs" typically retails around $8. After Weishi+shipping+customs fees, this seller is on the get-rich-slow track (though they have some cheaper aluminium models now).

Whether you are a Weishi fan or not, when you hold a Vincent and a Weishi next to each other, it is entirely obvious which is which. And the shave, well lets not go there!

I shudder to think that there is in this world a cheap knock off of a Weishi.

Clearly, your worst fears have been realized. And I understand that the Mingshi is also in this group.

That said, a Weishi that was manufactured correctly is not a bad machine and as I said earlier, you can lose this and not cry so much as over even the least expensive Merkur. I use one in my rotation though it is easily the one I'd give away first! :001_rolle

I used a weishi for about six months when I started DE shaving a couple years ago before I discovered other alternatives. I didn't find anything wrong with it and it gave me a consistent smooth shave every time.

That said, I don't know about this one, cheaper than a weishi gives me reason to pause.

The Ming Shi/ Derby Razor/ Shaving Factory Razor is more trying to be a modernized looking Superspeed clone than a clone of the Weishi. It's about as aggressive as a standard Superspeed, so not nearly as mild/ useless as the Weishi.

However, like the Weishi, it too suffers from inconsistent quality control.
