Question for you road warriors

I have started traveling a lot and want to limit myself to a carryon, so I am planning to switch back to my Trac II while traveling, but want to continue to use one of my brushes and a cream or a soap.

Does anyone know if the 3 ounce limit applies to hard soap products?

I have never used a soap stick - the only advantage in trying would be if they came in sizes of three ounces or less.

Can someone point me to a tutorial on using shaving sticks? I assume it is a lot like using soap, but I am unsure how you get started -- getting enough soap on your face or in your brush to start face lathering.

TIA.

I don't know if there is a tutorial but the first time I used my Arko stick it provided amazing lather. I wet the stick put pleanty of water on my face and rub the stick all over until I have a nice white film all over. Then wet the brush good and lather. If you try a stick I think you will be amazed, I was. Hope this helps some. By the way I always lather on my face and not a scuttle or mug.

Thanks for the information. I also face lather, so that should help in the transition to use a stick.

Are they generally three ounces or less? Does the packaging lend itself to keeping things closed up and clean, when traveling?

I would put it in a plastic bag. They come wrapped in foil and you can cut it in half to keep it to 3 ounces for travel.

Hard soaps aren't covered by the TSA regs, only liquids and creams. I tried to argue that my hair wax was OK to carry on once, and the agent explained that the deciding factor was whether the product could be spread by hand at room temperature.

Bob, the three ounce limit only applies to liquids. So soaps aren't covered under it, but creams would be. And even if they were, most shave sticks seem to weigh in at two ounces or under. For example, Palmolive's shave sticks are 50g or 1.75 ounces as is Speick and a couple others. QED and Mama Bear sell two ounce sticks, and Arko, which is the largest stick I've accounted is 75g or 2.65 ounces.

Sticks are definitely handy and excellent for travel. They take up little space, last forever, perform like our favorite soaps, and are TSA friendly. I use them quite a bit at home, too!

I travel with an Irisch Moos shave stick. They take up very little space, look like a deodorant stick and are under 3 oz, just in case you run into a TSA agent that can't decide whether it a liquid/cream or solid. You can also make a tube of your own using your favorite soap by grating into a deodorant container. Valobra makes a great shave stick, I like to grate them and put them in a soap dish for home use.

I used a cheese grater on a palmolive stick and packed it into a small Tupperware type bowl. It works a treat when I'm on the road.

+1

Has the added advantage that you're using one of the best soaps ever.

I really like the Valobra stick. While it is more of a "soapy" scent, this company makes the soaps for AoS and C&S. It's tallow-based, too. :001_tt1:
