Question About Uneven Hone Wear

I honed a Gold Dollar tonight with my new Jnat, it turned out great and the shave was awesome!!! I also honed up a Taylor 1000 Sheffield and the shave was less than stellar. Take a look at the pictures of the hone wear on the spine and let me know if the uneven wear could be causing me problems honing this razor:

If this is a problem, how can I correct it? Should I work it on the DMT 325 to even it up and then head to the 1k and redo the bevel or should I just leave it and do more work on the Jnat? The bevel is set on this razor but as I work it on the Jnat, the edge becomes uneven. It's sharp in the middle and heel but I can't get the toe sharp.

Thanks,
Shawn

You can't get the toe sharp because it doesn't contact the hone on your normal stroke. You may need to do an X stroke, or even a rolling X stroke. I would take a sharpie pen and ink the bevel, and then see what kind of contortions you need to do to get the toe to contact the hone. You will know when you get there since the ink will have been removed from the bevel.

The uneven hone wear doesn't really affect the way a razor hones or shaves up.

Ok, I'll give that a shot. It has a very slight smile but I wasn't completely sure if the wavy wear on the spine was giving me fits or just my stroke. Back to the drawing board...... Out of my razors, this is the only one that drives me nuts and it's the one that I really like and want to shave well!

Thanks,
Shawn

It's possible, but usually the wear just shows you how uneven the grind is, or how warped the blade is. It's a result vs a cause, if that makes any sense :).

I have a pimped GD#66 where the toe on one side gets a much thinner edge on it. I've done sways and rolling X's and need to bust out the Sharpie and see if I can do some hacrobatics to get the toe's bevel a little more in line with the rest of the blade myself.

On the blades that are off(one a brand new Dovo) I just go to work on the 325 dmt. Uneven hone wear doesnt bother me at all as long as it shaves. I consider a straight razor a tool. Whatever I have to do to get it to do its job is fine with me.
