What's new

OMG!! Thank you all (newbie experience)

I can't thank you all enough!! I have ben silently lurking, reading, studying, etc for a while here. After lots of reading and research I purchased my "new toys" and related supplies.

I decided on a
-1954 Superspeed
- Kiss My Face shave cream
- Semogue 1305 brush
- Aqua Velva (Blue) AF

I watched MANY videos, read many posts of proper techniques, etc...

After a week of wetshaving I am really loving this!! I am getting the best shaves in my life, saving major money on replacement Gillette Fusion cartridges, and finding this very calming and soothing.

I can't thank you all enough for teaching me what I've been missing for so many years of shaving.

The only thing I can't get perfect yet is how to get a clean shave on the areas of my neck just left and right of my adam's apple. The skin sinks in there a bit on both sides. I am still learning, but if anyone has advice or suggestions, I'll be more than happy to listen :)

The shaves will get better with practice. You've figured out by now that becoming familiar with the grain of your facial hair is crucial to a good shave, and as you become more familiar with it, the shaves will get better. I had trouble with my chin and the same area of my neck until I'd spent a few weeks learning the grain.

Congratulations on breaking free of the cartridge racket. I bought into the marketing hype from the time I started shaving. I thought that each new cartridge was going to shave me better. On a drunken whim, I ordered a shavette (straight razor that uses half of a DE blade) and some blades and the rest is history. It was a rough learning curve, but I was amazed when everything clicked and I started getting the best shaves of my life. You have reached shaving enlightenment once you realize that a single (cheap) blade is so much better than however many they're stuffing in those cartridges these days.

Welcome to B&B,

You have chosen your tools wisely grasshopper.

To get areas that are difficult, you can lay your hand flat below your lather and pull down while shaving your neck and throat, moving your hand around to be under where you are shaving. Keep your hand on one side and move your head in the opposite direction to tighten up around your throat. Use alum on your finger tips to help you grip your wet/soapy areas. Play around stretching your skin without shaving (while sitting around) to find out where you need to pull to get an area tight so that when you are all lathered up you know what to do.

You do not need it snare drum tight, just taught

Great news! It does get better believe it or not! That semouge in about a month will be a totally different brush.....

Your off to a great start! Give yourself some credit also for taking the initiative. Kudos. The good news is it's only going to get better as your technique gets improves. Welcome to B&B!

+1 what turtle said

Try mapping your 'against the grain' growth (ATG) with your hands there. My against the grain on my neck is sideways toward the middle of my neck and then goes up at around the adam's apple and face →↑← . I have to stretch my skin when I do an ATG pass on my neck with a DE razor to get it BBS. Now that I am using a straight much of the time, stretching the skin has become habit...
