NOS vs Re-plated

1963 Gillette Slim Adjustable (NOS) for sale on Ebay - Is there any way to tell the difference between a Re-plate and NOS ?

It looks like factory plating but not factory polish. I wouldn't consider it factory finish due to the hand polish. I would not personally consider it to be NOS, but I suppose that is semantic. It looks like he got one in excellent condition and polished and cleaned it and also polished and cleaned the case. That sealed pack of blades doesn't go with it and I don't think the thin blade came with it either. I wouldn't pay half of what he is asking.

Two slims and a Fatboy. One slim is true “NOS” unused, the other slim “factory fresh” replate from backroads gold where he does no hard polishing, and a “tuned up” Fatboy that was given a gentle Polish.

A lot of the professional razor resellers online hit the razors they sell hard with buffing wheels. It gives them smoother finishes that look great however the plating is thinner and more prone to corroding and having other issues.

Value wise these will stand out to collectors familiar with factory finishes. I avoid them. If you want a user thst looks nice just get something beat up for cheap and replate it.

Great advice!! To me the thicker the plating, the better! But, I am a ’user’ not a collector!

Thanks for all the replies - my take away is that you need to be a serious hobbyist with a lot of knowledge or a professional artisan who does plating and has the eye to spot a plate job

It’s not fun. I’ve gotten a lot sent to me misrepresented and selling anything can be difficult.

You‘ve been here long enough though, Put a want to buy ad up with what you’re looking for in specific. Someone here has it and might be willing to part with it without too much hassle.

I think most of the razors that seller has are replates. At the minimum they're over-polished.
Calling a single blade NOS in the listing title is one of the oldest clickbait techniques on eBay!

Personally, I would pass and pick up a decent user grade for $25 and give it a light once-over.

For us old timers this reminds me of Cedar Furniture Man. They had what seemed like an endless flow of pristine razors. I can’t say what their exact method was, but it appeared to me it was a buffing wheel, compound and a light box. Several members purchased razors and were highly satisfied, others not so much. I would imagine this is the case here. It all comes down to what works for you. Pay the price for something that looks shiny and new or buy a tube of metal polish, Dawn Detergent, Scrubbing Bubbles and do it yourself.

Also to me the only definition of NOS is something in the original packaging. You occasionally see a President or Aristocrat with the shipper. Fat boys and slims were in a sealed blister pack. That’s a rare razor that will fetch a high price.

Haha! I remember someone posted what he claimed were his exact methods but he did really start the razor flipping business. You would regularly see people attempting to do the same (and failing). Fatboys have thin plating that is unforgiving. I remember buying one for cheap because the plating was burned through with too aggressive of a buffing compound. (A Chris Evatt before photo)

I don’t remember their exact explanation but it was something like this: We say a little prayer, and lightly clean up the razor. Maybe someone can recall the exact wording. They were a hot topic for quite some time. I found a lot of razors in thrift and antique stores. In all the years I would say maybe 4 truly were NOS and they are getting more rare.

I’ve never had any luck in stores but if you’re patient and watch eBay, often, you run into deals before the flippers. Some are definitely NOS, others lightly used to the point it’s impossible to tell.

I’m a big fan of the 60s Style superspeed cases.

Well the truth is some E-bay Sellers are great, others are soso, and then you got scammers looking to take advantage of you.

One Razor sell I see all the time alway comes up when you look for Fanboys, and they list Slims as “AKIN” to a Fatboy. His slim are nice, but he I am sure hooks some buyer looking for FATBOY. Then he can fall back on his confusing listing, and saying it says slim.

Spending some time in life looking through a 10-15 Power Lope at Slides, I check photos well, and if SELLERS DESCRIPTION say see photos, with no verbiage, I look real hard at images. Most of time I pass.

Buyer beware, look hard, make copies of things you buy posted ads the actually ads on eBay, CYA or cover your a** if thing turn south.

I definitely have NOS. Just look, it's true it's a Canadian Old Type. I think the NOS razor should come with a factory kit.

However, some scratches are allowed on a NOS razor after many years. As for me, this is normal. For it is unlikely that time can pass by without leaving its mark.

+1! The key question is, ‘Do you want to shave with the razor?’ IMO collectors are very different from users. :popc:

Exactly. I was never a collector of anything I didn’t use, but if you are that’s a personal decision. I have friends with gun collections that are stored in safes and will never be fired. Once they pass I would imagine they will go to auction as their families show no interest in firearms.

I don’t have one razor or gun that I haven’t used. I found a couple NOS injectors and it was a cool experience to shave with something that had never been used. In the end it’s personal preference. Are you a collector or someone that chooses to use something?

What some people don't know is that many of the vintage Gillette razors come in sealed packages, blisters or the razor itself is wrapped in cellophane. I've seen even Fatboys that are sealed inside blisters, but I can't say for certainty that absolutely all of them came that way. Also, there's a difference between NOS and mint condition and not everting sold on the internet as NOS and mint condition actually is.

You have to know what type of razor you are looking for and then do your research on how the razor and it's packaging looks like and hopefully, you won't get scammed.
