What's new

New to DE Razors, and want to show off purchase and restoration.

I have recently become very interested in shaving with a safety razor after a friend recommended it to me. Still haven't tried it yet, still waiting to figure out which one I want to start out with. But, I have always been interested in antiques and the possibility of restoring them, so I figured I would give it a shot with a vintage safety razor. After finding a Gillette Super Adjustable at an antique mall, I followed a few instructions and tips on restoring it, that I found on the internet. Pretty happy with the results of my first attempt. Was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on getting the top plate of the razor better looking. Used a metal polish, but didn't seem to help much. Is this just the finish worn down too much? Anything I could do, save to get it re-plated?

Anyway, here are some before shots:

After shots will be in the next post.

I would recommend trying MAAS metal polish. If the scratches are too deep on the doors though, it won't buff out :(

Is that similar to Brasso? Used that. Not too worried about the scratches, there was just some discolouration that I couldn't get rid of. Either was, may not be pristine, but good enough to maybe use as my first razor.

Similar, a little more mild and gentle. You could definitely use this as your first, just make sure you find some Barbicide to disinfect it. Doesn't matter what it looks like, as long as it's disinfected :biggrin1:

Yeha, definitely. It's been disinfected with rubbing alcohol. Couldn't find barbicide. Will need to find some tomorrow.

Welcome to B&B! I love restoring razors. There's something really cool about giving something a second life. Looks like you did a nice job! If you already took polish to it, it's probably not going to get much better (although I second the idea to use MAAS in the future. Brasso is pretty harsh and shouldn't be used on some razors, so be careful. There's a cleaning and restoration section in the shavewiki here on this site that lists a bunch of cleaners/polishes commonly used for razors.

As for barbicide, you can get it at Sally's Beauty Company. It's a national chain, so there should be one fairly close to you. If not, go ask a barber/hairdresser where they buy it from.
