What's new

new to D.R. Harris (arko man). Any expectations, changes?

Hello gents. well my order from West Coast came in. I went fancy and ordered some D.R. Harris soap (that's as fancy as I get, I'm an arko man, and prosaso on weekends).
I'm a newbie to soaps. Drooped it in small tupperware container and waiting to use it tomorrow (daily shaver). I know the bars last longer.
Now I use mainly arko (tallow) and proraso red. Should I expect any change in the smoothness of my shaves?
I shave every day, mainly my mustache area, and always need smooth shaves because of the minimal hair. I've been really lucky these past 4 weeks, only 2 nicks. thanks again guys , hope the day went well.
oh, ordered the Lavender.

You should expect heavenly scents rather than urinal puck . And it's going to be a lot harder to load than Arko...load really heavy.

I like to face lather my D.R. Harris soaps. Just load it, then load it, then load it some more. When you think you have enough, load some more.

They are a good quality soap but personally I like the performance of Arko better

I haven't been able to bring myself to use Arko since I bought Harris lavender and arlington. Great soaps, wonderful scents. My half-used stick of Arko is headed for the trash soon because it's stinking up my soap drawer.

I think you're in for a treat scent wise and the performance should be top notch. I just put a puck of Harris Arlington into service after finishing a puck of Tabac. Now, if I could just figure out which of the two, Tabac or Arlington, I like the best....

thanks for the great feedback guys. Looking forward to tomorrow morning. Vlad, I mash my arko stix in a tub, use two spoons of noxema and a heathy splash of laurel infused water (laurel leaves boiled in water) mash with a mortar, let it air dry for a day, great soap. it's cheap so u can get creative.

I just found my puck of DR Harris lavender (packed away for my recent move), I think I'll use it tonight. I find that it loads very easily, perhaps I'm just a heavy loader.

Harris lavender is such a great soap. I started using it again for the first time in probably a year. I had forgotten how great it smells.

Well that is definitely FANCY compared to Arko and Proraso. You wanna know how good it is? For me I get my best and most comfortable shaves with DR Harris. This might change in the future but that's what the current standings are for me. I find it lathers pretty easily actually.

I lathered it up tonite. I find it's a subtle smell. My proraso red has more fragrance but it's a nice soapy feel with the harris. Slickness... well honestly as an arko and prosaso user (and razorock famiglia) I'd say it's rather good but not superb. Arko does just as well and the others too, maybe better (proraso and arko slickness I like better- fingertip test) It is a soap so ppl say the quantity of a good product justifies the cost.
I gotta say, as a first soap the experience should be good. But I'm gonna say I may not be sold on soaps just yet. we'll see. Just my initial thoughts and time may prove me wrong.

from reading previous threads I may not have loaded it enough on my initial lather nor let it settle. I mean I have yet to shave with it so I'm prejudging.

That's thing about soaps, you think you load enough but you don't. That was my rookie mistake with soaps. It'll get better and you'll whip up some crazy lather in no time. If it's to sudsy add more soap, if its too thick and dry, add a little more water.

you're right Krona. I couldn't resist. I shaved tonite. (Nick-dammnit- upper lip :cursing: getting used to holding the new EJ de89 barley chrome. I was formerly using a merkur claassic which I enjoyed. Helped me learn how to apply pressure and got my technique going.
lather was superb and loading more yielded a great shave. face feels great after some ogallala rum splash. too quick to judge. my mistake. I could be a fan of Harris now.

I lather Harris the same as MWF. Flood the puck with warm water for a minute or two, then pour it off. Swirl the brush slowly on the soap, and take your time loading it. Works well.

BTW, this produces great results with Arko, too.

If I could only have one soap, it would have to be a Harris soap. It needs a little bit more effort to use than Arko, but the results will please you for sure! Arlington, and now Windsor. Heaven!!!:001_wub::001_wub:

Expect to spend several times more and receive an inferior shave.
Arko is a substantially better performer.
Arko patiently awaits your inevitable return.
