What's new

"New" Shaving bowl

My efforts to ease into wet shaving aren't going well. Having trouble staying off the websites and browsing soaps, bowls, razors. etc. Oh well.
I managed to come across this neat little bowl in an antique shop near my office in Jefferson, Tx. Got it for $3. It's silver plated. I tried to make lather in it with the Proraso white tub soap. It didn't get as thick as I like, but still got a good shave. I seem to get better lather on my face, but this bowl should hold other soaps quite nicely. It was very tarnished, but after applying a little Bar Keepers Friend, it looks like new.

Good looking bowl.

Too bad it didn't whip a lather to your liking. But, for function over flash, those little $1.50 plastic salsa bowls at Wal Mart do a super job with bowl lathering. Unbreakable and maintenance free also.....

Merkur- I can neither confirm nor deny that.... Thanks all. I'm happy w it. I think I can get a lather in it., just need a little more practice
That's most of the fun I think!

Great find! I have a bowl very similar to this and it is more difficult to lather in. It just takes longer and the lather doesn't stay warm for me. Not my favorite bowl. Not a bad bowl at all. Congrats my friend.

Yeah, maybe. But not that sweet to the eye! :)

Right on! larzone

I see this like what I saw in the Harley community when I had one
To each their own, for sure. You can definitely customize your shaving rig to your own tastes

Very nice! I found a small stoneware bowl in an antique store yesterday for only $3, but I passed because I thought it might be too small. After thinking bout it, i may just have to go grab it up!

I use small bowls exactly like that for holding soap. Just press a puck into it and it works perfectly for loading my brush. I've been looking for a slightly larger one to lather in. Looks better than the stainless steel cat bowl I'm currently using.

Suggy,

Nice find. Awesome looking bowl. I think a puck of hard shaving soap will work great in it. I think the surface of the bowl might be a little slick for the softer soaps or the creams. Face lathering would be more effective with the prorasos and other softer soaps/creams.

+1 on the slick metal surface being the problem. I think that is why the Old Spice shave mug has ridges in the bottom--as do some scuttles.

Thanks gents! I've got a Col Conk mug that I keep my razor and a toothbrush in. My brush seems too short to get a good lather into the bottom of it. I also have a "Mister Shaving Mug" that may have been my grandpa's. It's a barber style that would hold a soap nicely. Guess I'll have to keep perusing the antique shops and see what I can scrounge up.

i have one very similar. i also have a bowl it fits nicely into. i fill the larger with hot water and it keeps the lather warm inside the smaller bowl. salvation army, $2 each.

Goatee- so many possibilities!
