I have many bowls for shaving and my favorite is a japanese suribachi bowl usually used for grinding rice and spices. It has ridges and whips up a nice lather every time.

They do look effective, but I have some concern they might grind up brushes, too.

I have bowl shave with my suribachi bowl for a few years. Haven't seen nor felt any brush problems. I especially love using the bowl with boar brushes. My favorite boar brush being the "whipped dog" 30mm
This has been a concern of mine as well. I have a marble Beau Brummell bowl which whips up a fantastic lather, but is a little coarse. No problem in the month or so that I been using it. I don't think it's as rough as a suribachi bowl, so I'm hopeful.
