Howdy, I know theres a few Aussies around here, but anyone can answer if they want ^^ Righty

I'm off to Sydney for the year on Monday, and i'm gonna need a phone, was just wondering what the best phone to grab is? Was thinking Iphone, but I've got an Ipod Touch already so I dunno if it's worth it or not, also thinking Blackberry but I haven't got a damned clue how good they are, so anyone got any Opinions or another Phone I should look into? Oh yeah, best Carriers too? Been researching those and knocking my head between a couple (3, telstra and Optus)

I have an iphone don't know how it would work where you are though. I would recommend though that you get the 3G or 3GS if you do i have the older version and service doesn't really seem up to par as the new iphones (typical apple trying to get you to buy newer stuff) blackberrys i have no idea about but one thing to consider is what carriers do your friends have? so you could get free calls calling your family/friends. hope this helps and good luck

I recently signed up to a 2 year plan with Optus that includes a free HTC Dream. Basically if you want anything that isn't an Iphone you can get a good deal. Iphones fly off the shelves and they can't get enough of them but all the other phones sit in the backroom taking up space so they have some good deals.

I'm not too fussed, Contract might be better, but all I have seen is 24 month contracts, not good when i'm there for a year (At the minute anyway, maybe longer hopefully) but I haven't seen many 12 month contracts about, Pre pay is also good, might be more expensive in the long run, but with he visa i've got I get a free Vodaphone (pre pay) Sim Card, if I pick it up, which I will as a back up, jsut want to know what else is good out there.

How is the HTC? You got it on Android OS or Windws mobile? Just been looking at them and they look pretty nice, I'm leaning more towards them now lol

If all you want to do is make calls and text you could buy a cheap phone outright and and go on a 12 month plan. Telstra does do 12 month plans. I think all the major carriers ( Telstra, Optus, Vodafone & 3) are always improving their pre-paid plans as they are more profitable for them.

Most people go prepaid these days, I only went over to a plan for convenience really so some prepaid plans are quite good.And 12 month plans do exists but I think they generally include a lower end phone so no Iphones on 12 month plans.

I am quite liking the HTC (I have Android) I particularly like having an actual keyboard on the phone and the nature of Android means that if there is something the phone can't do then there is usually a work around. I don't know about overseas but here only a couple of carriers even have it and they don't really openly advertise it, I had to go in and specifically ask about that phone they didn't even have one on open display.

if you are not using the phone for business purposes (sending and receiving emails, reading documents, etc) there is no reason to have a blackbery. I have one, but I use it as it was intended. It is a great phone, but a complete waste of money if all you need is a phone. I dont have much else for suggestions, just figured I would throw that out there and save you a few dollars.

Cheers guys, I wasn't sure bout the Blackberry, as low on the list, very low, but i'll have goosiegander when I arrive in Sydney, HTC does look pretty nice though.

Have you thought about the Nokia E75? You can get one outright (with no contract) from Qantas Frequent Flyers (using points) and then you can join to whatever carrier you wish. I got one and they work very well.
