What's new

Mycarvers weekend in O.C. NJ.

We got a chance to get away for a long weekend , probably the last hurrah for the summer in Ocean City NJ. We has been down a month or so ago when I went with my Brother in law for him to get a cut. The shop offered shaves ( which I got to watch ) and decided I'd stop by on my next visit which was this past weekend.
The current owner, Lora, has been doing shaves for the past year and a half or so. I also decided to get a cut as well as the shave even though my wife has her teachers/managers license in cosmetology and has been cutting my hair for nearly 40 yrs. now. Yes,, I cheated on her!
The shave started out with a pre-shave oil ( citrus and coconut ?) and massage followed by steaming hot towels. Then an application of some lather and another wrap of hot towels prior to the final lather using an AOS brush and Stephans soap. She used a Feather ( state laws) to do the actual shave. After the first pass she then again used the oil,, another massage followed up with a second layer of soap and the final shave.
Once done she cleaned my face , added a bit of Balm ( AOS Citrus lemon) a brief massage and a wrap of icy cold towels. Then she cleaned my face ,, gave a splash of after shave ( not sure,, sorry) a 'slapping' of my skin and quick rub down as she called it done.
I got a DFS,, spoiled a bit ,, But it sure was enjoyable.
If you're ever in Ocean City NJ... look her up. Tell her the 'Razor Guy" as she called me ( yes, I took some of mine along this time as well as some brushes) will take care of you.

Nice Mark, one of my friends brothers does straight shaves here, with feathers also. It is very nice to have someone else shave you, he does the towel wraps but not as many steps as she did. It sounds very nice.

Very nice! She must know her stuff. I've heard so many stories of catastrophe when barbers use Feathers. Too bad I'm on the opposite coast or I'd sit for a shave.

I have 4 barbers within a 5 minute walk of my house (and 5 salons!) and the only guy who does straight shaves is a young guy with a fresh lisence, don't know if I trust him or not yet. My usual barber doesn't do shaves because he said it takes too much time. He is the only guy in his shop.

Looks like you had a good experiance, I may have to try it out once, but I'm the kind of guy who doesn't like to pay for things I can do myself.

Looks like a nice time was had. I've been tempted to get a straight shave but 12 bucks for something I can probably do better myself, I just have a hard time doing it.

Oh,, I completely enjoyed it! Something about having someone massage your face,, apply the hot towels etc. Sure,, I know I could have shaved myself, and gotten closer ( I finish with ATG) ,,but I didn't think that was the point here. It's just fun.
I have heard that at AOS they're getting 60 for a shave.
Here it's $20, $15 for a cut or both for $30. For the occasional treat I think it's well worth it. I've blown more $$ for a lot less . And besides,, as my wife was taking the pics she said " There is something kinky about this" Ha! Maybe that's what made Lora ( the barber) crack up laughing.
Sort of the scene with Travolta in 'Phenomenon'.

Wish we had something like that here down south.............

Well, you can get a straight shave here in Chattanooga at Whiteoak Barber Shop. But it's gonna set you back $35... I have no idea if the shave is good or not - For $35 I can add another antique straight to the collection, so I'm too cheap to pay that kind of money.

Just wish it were a nicer face to go WITH the name! Ha!
Hey,, she's a barber,, not a plastic surgeon. And I only use razors,, not magic wands! But I've had it for 55+ yrs.... so I guess I'm stuck with it.
