My son is 15 years old and has had a light beard for a few months. I’ve let him know for years that if and when he wants to shave, he can pick from my 40 razors. He’s never shown any interest. That changed on Friday after he used my trimmer to remove the beard hair below his chin to create a “Wolverine” look. I wasn’t in the bathroom then, but apparently he really didn’t like how he looked. So, before I started shaving, and with 25 minutes before I need to leave for work, I get the call: “I want to shave before I go to school.”
No time for the long anticipated father to son demonstrations of correct technique, no time to map his facial hair growth, no time for any real prep; just enough time to get the hair off his face, as best we can. He used the trimmer to remove most of the beard. I used a razor in my current rotation, my birth year razor – 54 SS with an Astra Superior blade – to make the first pass on his face, and gave his some rushed instructions on blade angle. He then used the razor in a rather haphazard way to complete the shave, while I watched. It was a horrible shave, as was mine, but he didn’t cut himself, didn’t get any burn or irritation, and was satisfied with how he looked. That’s a success given the circumstances.
I’d like to think he’ll continue to use my gear, and not use cartridges and goo or an electric razor. But there was no predicting Friday’s events, so who knows. He’s a teenager after all.
