NRI: just visited Mumbai and bought lots of creams (no Biotique) and blades, and even a cheap DE razor. I hit stores everywhere from Juhu to Dharavi to South Mumbai. :)

If you are still there, the Biotique cream is available at most malls. Just remember to look in the Biotique section, not the shaving cream section & don't look for a tube: It's a tub.

Thank you ji, next time I'm in Mumbai I'll try the malls. I'm guessing places that stock Himalaya products and the like will have it!

I'm not from India but I wanted to weight in on Parker razors. I got my first Parker razor in yesterday. A model 94R Hefty. I loved it the moment I saw it but I could tell from the blade gap that it was aggressive. I took my time shaving nice and easy and got a great shave.
Over here in the States Parker razors are a great buy. Like others have said, I thought it would be easy to get a Parker razor in India. I hope the market frees up for you guys in India. You make nice shaving products.

Hello pyare deshvasiyon,

I am pleasantly surprised to find so many people from India on this forum involved in wetshaving. Can anyone give a list of great Indian products - preshaves, shaving creams/soaps, razors, blades, aftershaves, alum blocks, balms, etc. I'd appreciate it if everything was at one place - one comprehensive list of great/best/top products.

All of the godrej shaving creams
All of the old spice creams
dettol fresh/cool
gillette tube
godrej shaving round

This is a good list of creams.
To this I would add Biotique Bio Palmyra shaving cream.
It is the best cream available in India, & it is available only in tubs like premium imported creams.
It gives one a luxurious experience due to its sheer quality.
As we get so many good creams here, I would not advise importing any.
You may be disappointed . However, imported shaving soaps are often very good & should be considered.
Most Important: - AVOID ANYTHING THAT COMES IN A SPRAY CAN.

Aftershaves are very much an individual choice.
I normally use 4711 cologne as it does not give me a cold.
Also, as I often get a cold from strong smells,
I sometimes use clinic spirit (unperfumed alcohol, available at pharmacies) for an aftershave.
Alum blocks are also available for nicks & cuts after shaves.
I have a wide collection of aftershaves, but I use them very rarely.
Nivea has a very good alcohol free aftershave balm that is available in most malls.

If you are looking for DE blades, I find Gillette 7 o'clock blacks the best.
If you are looking for DE razors, regrettably, there are no good DE razors in India.
The closest you can get is the Gillette steel headed DE.
I think it is called the Sterling, but it is barely acceptable.
If you want a decent DE, you will have to import or order online.

Please also note that there are no good Indian made disposable razors available.
However, I have not tried the newer triple blade Supermax disposables.
Some new imported disposables (Personna's Glide) are now available, but I have not tried them.
They are sold under the Glide brand.

If you are looking for cartridge razors, there are many.
Two brands I can suggest are Gillette & Supermax.
The good Gillette cartridge razors available are: -
Mach 3 & its variants, Sensor & variants, Fusion & variants.
The Vector is very bad, avoid at all costs.
The 7 o'clock PII system is confusing as there are a large variety of compatible carts available,
most of which are either terrible or not good.
The original PII cart is good, but is expensive enough that other systems are better overall choices.
I find the Sensors to be the best, but the cartridges are very difficult to find, & are expensive when you do.
I often use Mach 3 myself when I am in a hurry.
In a lower budget, the Gillette Guard is a good cartridge razor, it is smooth but the shave is not very close.
It is a good choice for younger shavers as it feels safe.
It is the best choice (among cartridges) for
infrequent shavers as it is relatively unaffected by longer beards. Week long beards are no problem for the Guard.

The good cartridge razors by Supermax are any of their 3 blade cartridge combos.
The 4 blade cartridges (elegance) by supermax are not good.
However, the Supermax carts are slightly prone to nicks & cuts.
Please note that a Gillette Sensor razor using Supermax 3-blade carts makes a good combination,
& is cost effective.

I will need to know your age & shaving history to suggest a cartridge for you.

I have noticed your interest in straight razors.
While I feel that these are best left to professionals and/or masochists, if you are really interested,
there are good straight razor type shavettes in India.
These are used by most barber shops.
Using a shavette eliminates the need for honing, & is certainly more hygenic.
As there are good DE blades here, this may be a good combo for you.

It is very difficult to get good brushes in India.
Most shops have nylon bristle brushes available.
These are terrible & should be used only for travelling.
Some low end shops & some pharmacies keep natural bristle brushes of an indeterminate hair
(
with brands such as Bala) for about Rs 40 - 50.
These are very floppy and almost equally bad.
Some high end cosmetic specialists keep good brushes, such as Omega.
These start at about 350. I use an Omega myself.
Some places where you can get these are Beauty Centre and Willingdon at S.V. Road,
Beautiful near Podar School at Santacruz.
The Body Shop is said to keep a decent brush, but I have not tried it.
Some reviews on B&B & other sites have pointed out that the Body Shop brush is a processed synthetic type. The Body Shop stores are all over India.
In Bombay there are exclusive stores at Linking Road & Colaba.
There are also about 12 other locations in various malls all over the city,
including Palladium at lower parel, SOBO Central, Infinity Malad etc..
If you can inform me which part of the city you are in, I would be better able to suggest a convenient location.

For Mumbai residents: -
There is a street vendor at Churchgate, just outside Eros cinema, whose wares are well worth a look.
He sells shaving products exclusively, has a wide selection & offers a discount.
His stuff is low end, but it's an eye opener.
Finding parking is a little difficult, but I have managed to find space near Jai Hind college.
I have seen good brushes here, as well as a large selection of carts, razors, blades etc.

Crabtree and Evelyn have opened stores in Mumbai & Delhi.
In Mumbai it's at Phoenix Market City Mall,
In Delhi it is at the DLF Place Mall, Saket.
After their 2009 bankruptcy, they have closed over 35 stores in the US & UK,& are now solvent.
They are opening stores in Asia-Pacific as most of their profits are from there.
Reviews of their shaving soaps seem to be good.
As per their website, their shave soaps are priced at about US$ 9/- per puck of 100 grams.
I am planning to visit some time next week.

Do keep us posted on the C&E stores with respect to range of products and prices in rupees. I've read some good reviews to and wouldn't mind picking up some stuff if not too expensive!:001_smile

Found a few webite's in India which have Truefitt and Hill products and Omega boar brushes on offer.

The prices are very good. I think most of the products are new old stock, as couple of the tubs I bought had manufacturing dates in early 2012, but I don't think it matters.

The T&H luxury soap was extremely difficult to lather for me but the creams and brushes were excellent.

To be true very few people use DE here gust for example my DAD and Grandfather used DE but now they use Fusion , but i can't explain them because Fusion works for them (even for me but i enjoy DE :a54:)

can you give me some advice on 22R have you faced any alignment problem.

I can explain them...they probably had poor technique like my father. He loves shaving but uses Gillette Sensor 3 blades which I send him from here (the US). When I told him I had "discovered" DE shaving, he completely refused to try it because he said he would nick and cut himself all the time when he used one ~35 years ago. He told me I must have the angle right which is why I don't have a problem...which I really don't pay much attention to. So I asked him if he was applying pressure...and he said "yes"...I told him that was the problem. Another thing is that he refuses to shave after a shower...always shaves before.

My guess is that is the same problem with your dad and grandfather.

I really learnt how to shave by watching youtube videos (the ones by shavenation are great)...I never even had a informal shave lesson from my dad or friends.

I tried several blades while I was visiting last Dec. The only ones I thought were good were the Gillette 7 o'clocks. There were a couple of other brands where I couldn't even get through the pack...they just wouldn't slice through my beard. And the Gillette doesn't even come close to the Feathers (or even the Kai which is slightly less sharp than the Feather) which I use now.

And watch the chemicals in the creams in India. Unlike the US, they may or may not disclose all ingredients.

Hi there, another one checking in from Thane, near Mumbai. Currently using the Gilette 7O'clock DE razor with plastic handle (the only one available commonly) but badly looking for a nice quality DE razor - anyone having any tips other than importing?

hi Indian fellow members ! i have 4 of my 40 days old orders form ( bullgoose shaving and maggard razos ) USA but still waiting for the delivery. they send these items through USPS First class package which has no tracking post USA. Don't know whether i will be able to get my items or not. Have you guys ever bought supplies from US vendors ? How long it took to get the delivery ? My $300 orders are on stake:scared:

Wanted to say Hi here as another member from India. Somehow I must have missed this thread. Glad to meet other members here.

Hi, I am from Mumbai.

In Mumbai, I could procure Feather Blades, British Wilkinson Sword Blades, Dorco Blades and Omega Brushes and Feather and RiMei Razors from Musafir Khana / Crawford Market.

Supermax Platinum Plus Blades are the best Indian blades but are not found at retail counters. I had to buy them in a pack of 100 blades from Cutlery Market at Abdul Rehman Street.

I am in Delhi. Till now I have bought most of my products from US based saving stores like Maggard razor, Phoenix/How to grow a moustache, Cattie's bubble, Above the tie and ebay.com. Till now most of the shipments from US have come through USPS and absolutely no problem at all.

Among Indian products I liked godrej shaving creams and gillette 7 o clock platinum blades (black).
