Makeshift lathering bowls?

Anyone else here who didn't have a suitable bowl at home, didn't want to purchase one, and thus grabbed the nearest bowl-shaped thing?

I use the lid from an old 50-pack CD spindle, and it just occurred to me that it might not be the healthiest thing. Does anyone know if it contains carcinogenic chemicals or something that might leach out into the soap while I'm lathering? Also made a brush stand from a wire coathanger, nothing fancy.

[edit] Following the suggestion of lowjax, a picture of my lathering bowl. I like to think that little divot in the middle with the raised edges around it provides a little friction when I need it. Lets see yours!

I actually use these little bowls from Dollatree. They are 3/$1. Not the best (they are shallow) but I don't mind making a mess.

I use an ice cream bowl one of my best friends got for me in Mexico. It works really well, but it has actually prevented me from moving to a smaller bowl (I've gotten used to using larger strokes to build my lather).

Actually, what I REALLY REALLY want is a CaliBowl. It looks absolutely perfect! http://www.calibowl.com/

Just use the same bowl you have been eating your cheerios out of. Better yet, be a real man, and face lather!

When I first returned to traditional wetshaving, I developed a huge collection of bowls--mostly from estate sales, etc. A ton of mugs too. My favorite has been a stainless steel bowl with a rubber ring on the bottom--it's actually a pet food bowl. I started to face lather about 8 months ago, though, and I don't use any of the bowls anymore.

I use a hot chocolate bowl that my Mum bought from France about 35 years ago. She got one for all the kids and they had our names on. Mine got broke so I use one with 'James' written on it. So there you go, I don't even own the bowl I use - it's my brother's.

You could face lather until you save up enough money for a proper scuttle - then you could lather like a gentleman.

.......i agree.....scuttles are the way to go...... especially now that winter is approaching (barring the lucky folks who live in an all year warm climate).............

I create fantastic lather on the good looking mug I see in the mirror every morning :biggrin1:

This my friend is the best "argument" for face lathering I've read to date. Congratulations!

If you wash out the CD spindle top with soap and water a couple of times, it should be good to go. It's unlikely that anything toxic is going to leach out of the plastic into your shaving lather, and even more unlikely that a significant amount of it would be absorbed through your skin.

PS: I looked at my CD spindle covers, and they're pretty flimsy, but if you're happy with yours, ignore all the helpful hints. Bravo for your repurposing -- you've got a free lathering bowl and there's one less piece of plastic in the landfill.
