LF stone that cuts faster than a DMT C, but leaves finer scratch marks

Any suggestions?

The Nani 220 just isn't cutting it. Leaves a great scratch pattern, but cuts too slowly for my impatient self.

Looking for a stone that cuts faster than the DMT coarse, but leaves shallow scratch marks like the DMT 1k, :

sorry to say how in the world you will find 220 grit stone will cut faster then dmt course 320 but leave scratches same as dmt 1k?

Like I said, I'm sure it doesn't exist, but maybe someone knows something I don't. I'd settle for cuts faster than 320 DMT & leaves the same scratch pattern.

Ain't no sech animal.

The Shapton GlassStone 220 is pretty nice, and cheap, too. Their GS 500 is an amazing stone- cuts fast and leaves a finish that looks more like that of a 2K. If only their 220 could do the same, you'd have your stone.

The DMT XX coarse is a 120 grit, their extra coarse is a 220, and their coarse is a 320. The 320 doesn't leave as bad a scratch pattern.

Try a laser.

There is no such hone.

The whole point about grit size is the groove that the surface particles leave in the steel being honed.

I wasn't that impressed with the Naniwa 220 either, but I do like the 400 and actually on any of those low grit stones if you need more cutting power either pick up a Norton prep stone and use it to make slurry, or use the DMT to make slurry...

Heard about that. Wasn't sure it worked on the synthetics. I'll give it a try. :thumbup1:

Btw, does it work on the Shapton & Norton stones too?

As the title suggests, I'm on a quest for the holy grail. I am 90% sure, I'm not going to find it. But figured I'd throw this question out on the forum, and maybe someone knows of some exotic stone.

Looking for a stone that cuts faster than the DMT coarse, but leaves shallow scratch marks like the DMT 1k, Nani 220, etc. Basically, I'm looking for some mythical, magical restoration hone. Cuts through steel like butter, and leaves incredibly fine scratch marks.

2 threads merged following a request from leighton.

Yes it does, slurry is slurry, don't let anyone kid you...

If you remember the Coticule honing threads about using a Coticule with slurry to hone a razor from bevel to shave???
I did the exact same thing on a Norton 8k using a Norton prep stone to make the slurry....it isn't the stone that has the magic, it is the user that creates the magic with the slurry...

When I need to use a Norton 220 for serious repair issues I rub it real quick with a prep stone , it works wonders...

A Shapton 1k with slurry will cut steel so fast it will scare you, honest....
