What makes the Damaskeene better?

How does that impact the shave? Or is it mostly aesthetic?
I believe it changes the angle just a bit, and I don't feel the blades stops against my skin as much as I do with the standard 1912's flat cover plate.
The rounded edges have got to be an improvement. I dig the corner edges of my GEM push up and cut my face every time.
