What's new

Just cut myself properly for the first time. It stings!

I was completing my shave on the touch up pass and it happened. I have no idea exactly what happened but I felt a sharp nick and suddenly there was claret on the side of my boat. I was using Proraso green with a new Feather blade in my '66 Super Speed.

An alum block didn't stop the blood (but boy did it sting), I had to resort to the old method of tissue paper stuck to my neck. Under close inspection by my wife, she tells me that I've nicked myself on the other side of my neck as well, I hadn't even noticed that one.

I know we all do it but I've been getting blood free shaves since half way through my first week of DE shaving and this was a bit of a shock.

The blade has gone in the bank, I'm not letting that one near me again!

You may have moved the razor sideways with it still on your face. This can happen if you are not paying attention or get in a hurry.

Get yourself a styptic pencil. Stops the flow better than alum should you get a deep or large gash.

I nicked myself under my left ear with a square point straight and cut a nice 6" gash across my neck when I flinched. My styptic stopped that monstrosity (oh yea, it does sting too)

It's usually not a very deep cut. I'm not sure how stitches work, but I'd imagine that it sliced the skin but not a gash. More like a really bloody and long cut, but not deep. That's what I would guess, although I'm sure that's got to be painful!!!!

I really should thank the skies, I have never more than nicked myself. The worst I've done is sort of nicked my nose going for the high upper-lip hairs. But even the worst under the nose cut was tiny.

I sometimes end up with a nick or two, I just use a styptic pencil on them. Stings for a second, and is usually tender for a little while, but afterwards it's like it was never there.

One thing I was wondering about though - is it better to use the styptic pencil right after I dry off, or do aftershave and then use the styptic? I normally do it before, then wash off the residue and use aftershave, it seems to work alright.

Sometimes I use the styptic after the final cold rinse while my face is still wet. Apply it then rise again.

Sometimes when I don't see anything until the after shave is applied I use it at that time if it looks like it is going to show.

There is no fast rule but if you don't rinse it off (or at least wipe it with a wet finger) it will leave a white powdery mark where you used it

One thing you don't want to do is use your styptic DURING your shave as it will kill your lather.

If it's a small nick (I get some that bleed, but never bleed profusely), wouldn't just alum/WH/AS be fine for it? They all seem to do the same mistake, I thought the styptic was just if you couldn't get it to stop bleeding, I figure the rest of the products have enough astringent properties as well.

I use a styptic as soon as I see a nick...then I just wet my finger and rub the residue off. I've heard that the sooner the better. I love that thing, stops bleeding instantly and after I'm done I cant even remember where the nick was because it hides them so well.

another lesser known blood stopper is salt on a wet paper towel, burns like it hates you but its stopped some nice heavy blood flows
