If you are ever visiting DC and dig live music, head to 11th and Q, to a spot called Bohemian Caverns. Monday nights (tonight) they have an 18(?) Piece big band, all I can say is wow!!
I love Big Bands .. I work as a musician and have been playing guitar for a 19 piece big band for 30 years . I started when I was 15. I also do solo and duo jazz guitar and play in a trio and quartet setting ..
I've mellowed over time, and now prefer my jazz to be hard bop, say mid-1950s to mid-1960s. Blue Note RVG remasters are my favorites. They had a fabulous stable of musicians back then.
I generally only like older Jazz personally. Man, I can sit here for hours listening to Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Louis Prima ( more swing though)etc. Listen to Esquivel, man that music is great. It's not really jazz but it is beautiful.
