Jack Black Triple Cushion Shave Lather

I typically use AOS and Gentlemens Refinery but wanted to experiment with the JB shave lather. So, I have been practicing whipping up a lather in a bowl with it and this stuff seems to need a lot of water and the more you add the more it seems to be able to take. I really could not seem to get a watered down lather with it, but also wonder if what I did whip up was a bit too dry. Hard for me to tell. Does not lather up nearly as easily as AOS, but with some work and what seemed to me to be a lot of water I got enough for 2-3 passes. Anyone else experimented around with getting a proper lather out of this stuff? Any of you find it takes a lot of water? Anyone on here overly impressed with it? I have looked through some older posts and things seemed mixed. I don't find that my post shave skin feels quite as good with it. Seems like it dries me out a bit but can't understand why by looking at ingredients. I'll keep experimenting and seeing how it plays out but if anyone has any thoughts or ideas I would be interested to hear them. Thanks

Hey cdc,

I have a couple samples of this stuff sitting at home. I will try it out tomorrow and see how it works for me. I'll post back later and let you know if my experience was similar.

it used to be my go to before i discovered this site and now i use proraso and nancy boy with an occasional GFT or TOBS. While i love the JB smell, the performance doesn't compare to my new ones. I still have half a tub left if anyone wants to trade. I'm looking for arko, DRH arlington, emj, aos, or unscented/non floral scents of the 3T's.

I just finished up a tub. I love the scent, clean and medicinal. I applied it as a non lathering product, though. I painted on a thin layer with a brush. The performance was adequate but not stellar, but the scent was great. I'll stock up on more when I need it.

I actually just finished up about 2 weeks worth of experimenting with these more modern brand name shaving creams and assumed (incorrectly) that they were all non-lathering.

Here are my thoughts on each for anyone interested:

Anthony Logistics Shave Cream - Most impressive lather of the bunch, nice light menthol feel and scent, easily comparable to the 3 T's minus the fancy scent.

Baxter of California Super Close Shave Formula - doesn't really lather per se but spreads on nicely with a brush and gets super slick with the addition of more water when face lathering. Very similar to Anthony Logistics light menthol feel and scent - the shave was absolutely superb though. Best shave of the bunch.

Cremo Cream Shave Cream - Meh...couldn't get it to lather, similar consistency to Baxter but not as slick. I didn't really enjoy the scent and the shave was not that great over all.

Jack Black Supreme Cream Triple Cushion Shave Lather - Almost as easy to lather as Anthony Logistics or traditional creams (the 3 T's). I didn't really enjoy the scent very much but it wasn't offensive either, no menthol feel but the shave was great over all.

Well, I shaved with my sample today and I have to say my results did not exactly match that of the OP. I used my Duke 2 brush and, after a quick soak in warm water, I only removed a little of the excess water in the brush with a soft vertical pump. I was expecting it to eat water like the OP suggested but mine did not. The water from the brush was enough to create volumes of rich creamy lather in my bowl. The resulting lather was so saturated that it was falling off of my face and trailing down my brush a little when I began to apply it to my face. In the future I would probably give the Duke another shake before lathering this cream.

Overall, the resulting shave was nothing notable. Jack Black provided adequate glide and cushion but I could barely detect any scent and it did not leave my face as moisturized as other creams I have used. I would not say it dries me out necessarily but I was not all silky like when I use MWF or T&H.

This was also my first cream b.b. (before b&b). To me it takes a bit more product and effort to lather, but once it starts to lather I can get a lot out of it. I actually really like the scent, it's a bit medicinal and subtle, but I got used to it and really enjoy it when I still use it. The consistency sort of reminds me of Nancy Boy creams. I don't use it very often because I now have others that I tend to reach for more often, but I do still like reaching for it from time to time.

It's my understanding that it was recently reformulated to lather more easily. It started out as an almost non lathering cream. After it was reformulated some containers were labeled as such, but they must have dropped this. I no longer see this on their labels. Makes me wonder if the scent is the same or it's been changed also.

Great point, my tube was brand new, I must have purchased the newest formulation.
