What's new

Its disturbing on how much I enjoy "the shave".

"The shave" to me really has become a morning or evening ritual for me. It really is zen like. I enjoy it so much that I have given up my beard for quite sometime now. The more amusing part is I think I look better with my beard and my lady feels the same. Yet I would rather shave not because I like the way I look from the process but from the motions and ritual that come with "the shave".

It's my "me time".

Just rhetorical statement and also seeing if any of you other guys feel the same.

YESSS toward the end of the day all I can think about is how I can't wait to get home and shave.

I absolutely agree with you both and I was telling my wife how I thought shaving was very zen because when I am shaving that's all I am thinking about. Nothing else comes into my mind, I am just concentrating. By the time the shave is over it feels like it was 5 minutes when in reality it was 20.

Love it and look forward to it all day and if I already shaved that day I wish I could shave again by the time the day is over.

I like the days where I shaved in the morning and have a formal event in the evening or just going out, so it gives me a reason to get rid of that post 5 o'clock stubble.

I'm gonna go shave in a few. I am super excited. I'm building up my excitement as we speak. Butterflies, the whole works..

I always look forward to shaving now. Never thought I would say that. Making the lather, the scents from the creams and soaps and after shaves. Cutting the hair with a manly DE instead of wussified cartridge. It has certainly changed from a chore to a part of the day I look forward to.

It's amazing to think that shaving can actually be fun, but it really is. My one regret is that I can shave but once per day.

I also look forward to my shaves I lvoe shaving in the morning taking my time in getting that DFS almost BBS by the time I walk away I feel like I could take over the world!!

I feel the same, even though I've only been at it a few months. There is something comforting and relaxing in the ritual of shaving; choosing the wares for the day, noticing how the brush blooms as it absorbs water, coaxing a good lather out of a spot of cream, enjoying the scents, the tingling of the face as the lather softens the whiskers, and the beautiful music of the whiskers 'plinking' as they are shorn off by the blade. And after all that, there is still the cold splash and aftershave left to enjoy. It is Zen. It allows you to live in the moment, to focus on the here and now, to take pleasure in the simplest of activites.

It's a shame I wasted twenty some odd years hating shaving, makes me wonder what else I hate that I could actually love?

Indeed! I am blessed with a fast-growing beard and can even shave evenings and mornings if the inclination strikes...and it often does.

You are the luckiest man I know!

If anyone has ever seen pumping iron with Arnold Schwartzennegger? The way Arnold describes lifting weights and getting the "pump" is exactly how I feel about shaving.

Arnold Schwarzenegger: The greatest feeling you can get in a gym, or the most satisfying feeling you can get in the gym is... The Pump. Let's say you train your biceps. Blood is rushing into your muscles and that's what we call The Pump. You muscles get a really tight feeling, like your skin is going to explode any minute, and it's really tight - it's like somebody blowing air into it, into your muscle. It just blows up, and it feels really different. It feels fantastic.
[continuing about The Pump]
Arnold Schwarzenegger: It's as satisfying to me as, uh, coming is, you know? As, ah, having sex with a woman and coming. And so can you believe how much I am in heaven? I am like, uh, getting the feeling of coming in a gym, I'm getting the feeling of coming at home, I'm getting the feeling of coming backstage when I pump up, when I pose in front of 5,000 people, I get the same feeling, so I am coming day and night. I mean, it's terrific. Right? So you know, I am in heaven.

shaving=zen

it seems embarassing in way that it seems so nice, and I would not say it everywhere, but around here we are in very understanding and like-minded company

to me, after a nice shave, it literally feels good to be alive--can't ask for much more than that

I am with you on everything you said! I, however, wasted about 35 years hating shaving. Although I started on a Gillette "Black Beauty", nobody really taught me how to shave because all I had available at the time as a very young man was canned goo. Shaving, particularly in the military, was something to get done and over with as quickly as possible. Also, because of the military, I was forced to use cartridge razors like the Atra.

I even found myself trying to wait as long as possible between shaves because the M3 cartridges are so expensive. So, I would often wait days between shaves and only shaved because the stubble became so long that it started to itch. Even then, a warm water splash, some goo and a quick swipe with the M3.

Now, I find that my shave time is something very private and rewarding. I'll either shave when I get home from work late at night when everyone else is asleep so that I can take as much time as I want to, or else shave when my three-year old grandson is around so that he can watch the entire ritual and experience the fragrances and touch the lather.

My grandson will even mimic my brushing on the lather and shaving motions! Perhaps one day he will remember all this fondly and take to "our" method of shaving when he becomes a young man.

Regards,

David

For those without this blessing, you can approximate it by dropping a pass in the morning and just going DFS, saving the BBS for the evening. Or perhaps I am lucky as well

I shave every morning before work, it is the best part of my morning.
It normally takes me half hour to shower and shave, the time just seem to stop still as it seems to me that I only spend 5 minutes.
It is surprising that the quality of my shave seems to dictate how my day will be, if I have a bad shave I always seem to have a bad day. But if I have an excellent shave, I always have an excellent day..

Im certainly looking forward to receive my DE after using a Mach3 for several years now! I feel like a kid looking forward to getting a Playstation! However since Ive stopped using those horrid canned creams and started using a badger brush and Trumpers cream, Ive been looking forward to shaving a lot more. I can't wait to make it even better with my DE when I get it.

Don't feel bad. It's not disturbing. I've actually lost sleep over the prospect of a first shave the next morning with a product I've been dying to use.

Also, I regularly describe the experience as Zen.
