I'm lovin' the scuttle

I absolutely love my G5 scuttle. :thumbup1:
Nice thick creamy hot lather.
This is the way to go. My routine just got that much better.

Anyone else impressed by it?
How does it stack up against others?

I also love the G5 scuttle! How do you heat the water and what temperature do you put it in at? I have had a few problems with have the lather too hot.

Basically, what is your G5 use procedure?

My hot water tank is hot, I should really turn it down, but... you know.. you just don't get around to it.
anyway, that provides hot enough water for me.
I just run the water, get it nice and hot and put it in both the outside and inside bowl. Then I jump in the shower, do my thing and when I get out, I empty the water and fill the outside again.
I fill the sink with some hot water (for cleaning my razor periodically)
I wet my brush, have at the cream or soap and make my lather.
If I don't have enough water, I dip my brush in the hot water in the sink.

Today I used TOBS Eton College and it whipped up nice. Tomorrow I'm going to go for the big one and see if I can lather MWF. I can only face lather it.

If that works... I might even try (gasp!) Williams

This is the only scuttle I've ever had, and I love it, although I am thinking of getting one of the big Schwarzweisskeramiks. They're still not as beautiful as my Hamada & Persimmon G5, though.

The easiest way to reach the proper temperature is to buy an electric water heater. They're cheap countertop appliances that allow you to heat water to a selected temperature.

I boil water in a kettle, then add hot tap water to adjust the temperature. I count off a certain number of seconds for both amounts of water, so it's always just hot enough!

Be careful about pouring boiling water into the scuttle, though. It can crack the joined pieces unless you warm up the scuttle first. You can put hot tap water in the scuttle while the water is boiling if you want to do this.

I have an electric kettle in my den, so I guess I am wondering how to determine that perfect temperature. My kettle does not have a temperature gauge, or thermometer, and I have been getting dry lather as a result or too much heat. I guess I will just have to continue my trial and error!:tongue_sm

I like my G5, too. I was set to bowl lather until Father's Day, when I was surprised with the Green Oribe and Purple. I would leave a thin walled bowl sitting in the hot water with my lather and brush to keep things warm between the first and second passes. It worked well. I don't have to worry about dropping something into the scuttle, though, or knocking it over in the sink. I fill it with hot water, inside and out, put the brush in the lather bowl, fill the sink, pour out the lather bowl, and go to town. Plenty of warm lather! I tried face lathering some Williams the other day and let the brush sit at the edge of the sink between passes. I missed the warm lather!

and here is the MWF I whipped up today.
I've never had this much nice lather from it with just a bowl or with face lathering. I am very impressed. I used the same method as I described above.
On to the Williams!

I just received and used my G5 for the first time yesterday as well. Warm lather for the win; it is quite luxurious.

What is the G5 like versus the DB1.5?

California Cajun wrote a very good review on various scuttles. The main difference is that the G5 has a 6.5 ounce reservoir for hot water. The DB 1.5 has a 13 ounce reservoir. The DB 1.5 stays hotter for longer.
There are other reviews in the review section.

I'll agree that the G5 does me for 2 passes.
It cools off quite a bit after that.
But what wonderful passes they are! :thumbup1:
