What's new

I tried Pinaud Clubman Today!

I went to my local CVS where someone had opened the Pinaud Clubman. I checked to see if anyone was looking and dabbed some on my wrists.....

An hour later I still smell like an 83 year old man!

HoratioCaine will be thrilled to find out it was not a Shaving Nirvana moment.

But the scent is amazing in that it is sooooooo 1950's. So traditional.... so American..... so "Wow, I've smelled this before a million times!"

I'm glad a I tried it. :tongue_sm

You tried Clubman, yet did not purchase it? You should to return the store and slap down the $7 for the Pinaud goodness. The charm of Pinaud Clubman is that is does smell old-school barbershop.

Pinaud Clubman is amazing. If you apply judiciously it's magic. Soooooo old school and the drydown is superb. But I admit that I've never used it as an aftershave. It seems to be just alcohol and fragrance.

I've heard conflicting reports on which came first -- Canoe or Clubman. I like Clubman better and the Pinaud name is older, so I'll continue to think that it's the original.

hehehehe It is soooooo classic!!! Just not for me... but in about 40 years I might revisit it.

It works well as an AS. I chase it with a bit of Clubman talc to get ride of the "shine". Nice.

I liked it as an aftershave. It left my skin feeling smooth and quite refreshed after the fires of hell subsided. I just couldnt get past the smell. Never was a fan of Brut, and this smelled about the same. I used about 1/3 of the bottle till I got a different aftershave, then flushed it down the toilet (blasphemy, I know). I plan to use the bottle for my home-made aftershave when it is done "brewing".

Of the Pinaud products I have tried, I would recommend the classic vanilla and the special reserve. They leave the skin feeling the same as the original, but the scent is tolerable. I havent found them in any stores. Mine were purchased from classicshaving.com.

Put a dab of 444 balm and Pinaud and watch out. It minty and puts the sting to a very minimal sting. 444 with anything is great!

Do you find the Vanilla a masculine scent? I mean, I love vanilla, but I've only encountered it in perfumery as a feminine aroma.

It is not much of a vanilla scent at all to my nose. Not in the sense of sweet, vanilla perfumey scents. It is kind of hard to describe, but I like it. My wife likes it, and she is almost as picky about scents as I am. The reviews on basenotes say it is pretty sweet, but I dont personally find it to be overly sweet.

Regular old Clubman is my favorite of the Pinaud ranges. Fantastic just as it is, right out of the bottle. Vanilla smells a lot like British Sterling and is also very good.

Special Reserve has a warm, leathery fragrance with a hint of the mysterious "vegital" underneath. A little like English Leather Musk mixed with the pot liquor that's left after you cook collard greens. For me, the two don't quite come together in a way that I would consider pleasing. But they certainly do with Lilac Vegetal, where the scents of early spring and winter decay seem to fit together perfectly.

The Eau de Portugal and Eau de Quinine are both nice too. Although they are technically hair tonics, they also work as aftershaves.

The Bay Rum is not to be missed either. Apply it gently after you shave and you'll feel as if you escaped the burn. For about three seconds. Then it's like ten thousand demons are rending your flesh. We're talking Hellraiser here. After it calms down a little, you're left with a nice, piratical scent.

What's nice is you can go to a brick and mortar shop where they sell Clubman and clean them out--probably for about $50.

My bottle ended up in the toilet also, i can't stand the scent.

Shakespeare?

Mix it with 444 and you will love it more.

+1 on the 444 balm. If you mix it with any AS you can make anything very usable.

On its own Clubman burns like hell, but for some strange reason my skin likes burn. Whenever I use a burny AS I don't get any irritation, so go figure. The scent is very like Brut but I find the Clubman stays on me all day. However, it is quite a strong scent so I would not use it everyday or wear at interviews. Overall its good and I will probably always use it and I am not over 60. BTW all Pinaud products are supposed to be based on the work of French parfumiers.

I have both but prefer the Clubman...I easily use a bottle a month and that stuff sells off the shelves at my pharmacy which is right next to a retirement home! :badger:
