What's new

I love balms and so do you, right?

So, after finishing my Speick AS Splash, shelving my Tabac AS Splash and returning to my basic Nivea Mild Balsam; I honestly don't think I will ever go back to a splash again!

I mean damn, I have to cut the splash with water to dumb down the alcohol, it dries my skin out like the Mojave Desert, resulting in the use of lotion on my face, and I have to use a lot to get full head and face coverage. Now, I don't mind the sting, as it lets me know how hard I worked in one area, but the dryness...in the words of Sweet Brown http://youtu.be/JaAd8OuwwPk?t=25s

Now balms, hell they provide the coverage of a lotion, have astringent properties and provide moisture...it's a no brainer...right?

Balms are my personal preference, primarily because I really don't like the sting from splashes. That said, there are some times when a splash makes more sense to me, especially when it's hot and humid.

I like balms this time of year, Western PA winters really tend to dry out my skin. In the summer I reach for my splashes almost exclusively though.

To each his own, I guess. There are many modern AS splashes that I'd actually wish were MORE drying than they are. Too much glycerin or other moisturizers for my liking. I like the clean, smooth feeling I get from old-school splashes.

Besides, the alcohol evaporates very quickly after you splash it on your face. It's not as if it sits on your skin and dries it out the whole day.

I use them in cool/cold dry weather after applying AS for the moisturizing benefits they have. I have several scented ones, many from QCS that I try to get close to the cologne I'll be using.

I think its the "alcohol evaporation" process that dries my skin out. I mean, as the splash dries, my face is crying for moisture. Maybe I will try alcohol free. It clearly has to do with how much oil your skin produces, and lets just saying, I can get pretty damn "ashy" if left uncared for lol

I can see the appeal of a splash AS but personally prefer a balm.

The L'Occitane cade one moisturizes very much.

I just ordered the I Coloniali rhubarb one. Hopefully it won't be a watery bad quality balm.

I always use balm - my dry skin appreciates the moisturizing. Haven't used many - just the Nivea Regenerating and Cool Kick balms.

Haven't used an after shave in donkeys years! It's not so much the sting that I don't like but the lack of moisturising ability in the after shave. I got balms all the way now - my favourites and most used are Roger & Gallet's L'Homme and L'Oreal Hydra Sensitive for Men 24hr balm.

I use them both only because I have them. But if I had to choose...I would pick a balm.

Usually I splash first and balm afterwards.

Balm. Sometimes splash + unscented balm. Splash alone doesn't work for my skin, it ends up feeling dry. The feeling that the skin is a size to small to fit my face

Absolutely, balms are definitely great. Whenever I use a splash I always follow it up with an unscented lotion.
