This morning I was running late, but still needed a shave. More importantly, I wanted a shave, to try out a newly recieved sample of Mikes Natural Soap. Throwing caution to the wind, I skipped the shower, didn't wash my beard or thoroughly soak it, and didn't use a hot towel. In short, my prep consisted of splashing a little water on my beard and then lathering. The lather was sub-par, as I didn't load my brush enough. It was just a little thin and runny. I also used my lesser-quality straight razor instead of my Hart, and only stropped it about half as much as I normally do. The shave itself felt rough, as the blade was not smoothly gliding, though it did not pull or hurt.
Then end result defies logical explanation. It was by far the best shave I've experienced in my two years of wetshaving. My face feels amazingly smooth and comfortable. Really, I'm astonished. My first genuine BBS shave.
Over the past two years I've experimented with a lot of different prep routines, and thought I had settled on the best routine for my face. Apparently I may have been wrong, though it remains to be seen if this spectacular shave can be repeated.
It just goes to show that even if you think you've figured everything out, you might be wrong.
