What's new

How long did it take to actually use up a soap for the first time?

So after a mild case of SAD, and having nun-of-ya-business amount of soaps in my rotation, I'm hardly putting a dent in any of them it seems (well, maybe the Cella :001_tt1:). At this rate it's going to take me a couple years to finish up a single soap.

How long did it take for you to finally finish up one of yours?

It takes me about three months of daily shaving to go through a puck of Williams or VDH Deluxe, which were the first two soaps I used. At first I was going through them a bit faster than that because I was doing extra shaves in the evening, just for the zen experience.

Right now I've been working on the same tub of Mama Bear soap since the middle of May. It will last me at least four months if not six.

You might want to check out the My Guess... 3017 thread. Johnnie Gold and some other members are working their way through some high end soaps from beginning to end and recording how long those soaps last with daily use.

I bought a Mama Bears last summer that I am almost done with, maybe a few more shaves. I used it pretty heavily for awhile.
It is a glycerine soap, so it does not last as long as the tripple milled and what not.

Last summer as in summer of 2011 I take it?

About 3 years in for my Pre de Province soap and I easily have another 3 years left in it. Its not my daily soap, as i switch between a few different soaps/creams. But for a solid year it was my only soap. Its amazing how long these things last.

The first soap I ever finished was VdH deluxe. It took about a year. It was not the only soap in my rotation. I was also using AOS and Castle Forbes cream. Since then, I have finished both of those latter two as well as a second VdH deluxe. This is about 2+ years into DE shaving. I have mildly hard water, so I tend to load lots and lots of product.

I have a puck of Williams which I started about 2 years ago. It should last maybe 30 or 40 years - if I ever finish it.

I've been working on my 1st puck of MWF since march. 3-4 shaves per week and I'm not even halfway through it. I think it'll last me a year. Which means I have 3 years of soap in the closet.

Hmm... perhaps I should hold off on buying backups of my favorite ones
Perhaps not. Some of this stuff goes out of production or gets reformulated. Besides, you need to be prepared for the Shaveapocolypse when it happens.

My intention is to be working for another twenty years, but back when I planning on working another thirty years I wound up underemployed for three years. One of my goals for next year is to build up a sufficient stash of consumables that I could ride out such an event without a problem. I'm on the 2012 Sabbatical or I would have already started hoarding soaps and blades. If you have the financial means, storage space, and expected lifespan there is no harm in going ahead and getting supplies now.

I used to knock off a puck of Col Conks in 5-6 weeks.

Now the triple milled things last around 3 months of steady use but it takes the discipline of the 3017 crowd to do that....

I used to use Burt's Bees Bay Rum soap exclusively for about 8 years. With of daily use, each puck lasted two years - which is most likely why it was discontinued.

My first tube of cream, C&E Nomad, took a few months to polish off. After that two tubes of Musgo Real took about 6 weeks each to use up. Most soaps or creams will last two to three months depending on how much you use up per shave. Some soaps last longer than others too. My first puck of Tabac lasted me about 4 months.
