How aggressive is the "Old Type"?

I've had this razor for a few months. It's in great shape. I bought it for $14 only because I didn't have an Old Type razor.

So I shaved with it for the first time last night. It definitely felt like I was using a sharper blade then the new red IP I used. Except for the different feel with this type comb, the shave felt fairly smooth. But when I finished I felt irritation on a couple places, primarily between my chin and my cheek. It was like a mild razor burn. And this morning, 12 hours after my shave, my face was still BBS. Is this normal for this razor?

Yes, I would say that is fairly normal. The razor burn would have come from a yet unlearned technique with the Old Type. After a few more tries I would expect that you would be getting irritation free, BBS shaves with the "Old Guy".

Great. That's now a challenge. I'll try again in a couple days. I've also got a "New Improved Bostonian" coming in I want to try but I guess that will be closer to "The New" because of the long comb.

Thanks, Guido,

The New Improved will be almost as friendly as the NEW DeLuxe (the thick flat guard NEW's). It is my second favorite razor to the DeLuxe.

I wish I could have mastered my Old Type. Every time I used it there was blood and much styptic pencil action. Ended up selling it in BST.

Just seems baffling that I found it so difficult. I can easily achieve BBS with a slant or HD; Just not an Old...

I can guarantee you that the technique required with an Old Type would be radically different than the slant or HD.

I tried both, Old type and Slant and if I look at "Ease of use" feature, the Slant is easy. Having said that, the Old type is not impossible to work with. I use it daily and get great shaves out of it. You just need to be careful... Aren't we all with any razor?!

I like the old type, just take your time. The shave of the Slant was no different to me then the one from my HD, both of which I have now sold.

In my experience a big thing with the Old is that it is easy to mis-align the blade. My two will allow a greater exposure on one side than the other if I am not real careful when I install it.

The problem may be your blades. If they have too wide of an area for the positioning pins it can misalign. But, if they match perfectly then the fit will be perfect. In other words, Don't blame the razor, blame the blades.

Blame whatever you like; I was telling him a possible cause for his trouble.
The truth remains that Olds and Slants are slightly problematic when loading blades, and most new guys don't notice the problem.

I notice that sounds harsh; it wasn't meant to be. I was just warning him of something it might profit him to check.

Do you have any idea what blades might fit better?

No problem. I have had good success with a variety of blades. Currently I have Gillette 7 O'Clocks and a Feather loaded in my Old types. I just went an checked them and the fit is true. No play at all that could allow misalignment.

This is why I feel the blades are at fault.

I was using feathers myself and I still have to watch the alignment closely.

I was thinking it could be a wear issue with the razor; but you could be right. I'll dig it back out and try some new blades.
