GFT Tallow Formula Soap with wooden bowl - worth $195?

So my arrival into wet shaving was a bit after GFT tallow soaps were reformulated.....I hear great things about how the tallow GFTs performed and how awful the new, GFT soaps are......I just saw on Ebay (it's a fixed price listing, so I think it's ok to mention it, if not mods please delete this reference) a seller asking $195 OBO for the different scents he has.....was it really that great of a tallow soap? I have no idea if this is a decent price (maybe it was one of the best tallow soaps ever and the bowls were made out of magical wood :wink2:) or is this just another case of someone trying to exploit a solid discontinued formula and hoping someone will bite.

I am really interested to know about how the GFT tallow used to perform.

Thanks,

Jason

That's a bit high IMHO...ok, more than a bit. That said, price is so YMMV...how much would you pay for a quality Badger Brush? House? Car? The value of a dollar is so, difficult to quantify because so many folks feel differently about it. I'm not that big into cars....so a Ford Ranger will always be my go to..,could never see spending more than $20-25K on an auto...and truthfully that's even too high IMHO....but so many feel spending a lot of coin on a car is a good thing. Are either of us right,or wrong?

The most I've ever paid for a soap was somewhere in the $75 range for vintage Yardley a couple of years ago....and it's an equal, if not better, performing soap, but if you absolutely need to buy this to round out your collection or something...only one stopping you is SWMBO LOL

I wouldn't buy it at that price unless I was a collector. The tallow version is extinct and hard to find, adding value to it as a collectors item.

The most I paid was for a vintage puck of Penhaligons EF, I think it was around $55 from Bullgoose.

I still have a puck of Coconut GFT tallow.

It's good, really good - but not 195 bucks worth of good.

Having said that - you're probably not going to be seeing too many sealed pucks of that stuff any time soon.

No soap is worth that, none.

No matter how rare, how old or how good. No soap is worth that price tag or anywhere close to that.

No no no.

That is taking it to another level. And I thought Id never say it but.....Get two MdC and save $60.00.

Not to mention, 5X the amount of soap. Those GFT pucks are only 80g.

I hope it comes wih free shipping for thst price.

More power to him, but I wouldn't pay 1/4 of that. Give me 4 pucks of Arlington anyday, or a giant jar of MdC fougere. Yea, thats where my money's at

Only 80g!!!!!!!!! I just threw up!

Hell, who cares about the shipping. Hope it cost $200.00. (to make the soap seem better)!

AND it would be 5+ years of awesome shaves. Even djh would question that.

ftfy

No doubt, however, that the shaving would be fantastic!

And for our OP. I would never dream of spending that sort of cash on one puck of soap (unless, perhaps, at a charity auction). Grab a couple of pucks of Czech & Speake, a couple of DRH and then Tabac, MWF......... money much better spent.

No way. I stocked up on Pen BB right before they dropped the tallow. And while I love that soap, and it is awesome, those old formulas are not that much better. There are just far too many great, cheap alternatives all over the place these days.

We are talking about soap here.
