What's new

first straight shave!

so after picking up a boker and a corborundum hone from the antique store last night, i went to work honing the edge, sterilizing, etc. I don't have a strop yet and I'm sure I need to use a finer hone, but I couldn't resist trying it out. I stropped on fabric as it's the best I could do. not too bad for the first time, just did two WTG and tried a few spots XTG/ATG and only one nick, under my nose. of course I had to clean up with a DE but I'm excited to get it properly sharp and have another go.

Congrats. Pics of the razor? Though my own honing needs improvement, if you would like, I would be happy to hone your razor for you as a PIF. Coticule with JNAT finish. PM me if interested. Regardless, congrats on your first shave. It only gets better.

Nicely done, sir. Keep at it. :thumbup1: It's posts like yours that make me one to try out the straights. Some day . . .

You just have to remember you need to keep PAYING ATTENTION when you straight shave because these utensils are unforgiving. I only go WTG with my straight for a SAS, then I use my DE/SE for a XTG/ATG pass to finish up with a DFS/BBS.

That's a great offer Joe, but I know what you guys and your natural stones are all about.:glare: Be careful Anthony, once you shave off a JNAT edge, you'll be infected with what Alfredo refers to as "MOJO". This is a condition whereby you wander around slack-jawed (albeit smooth-jawed as well) wondering if every natural surface you encounter could hone your razor.

"I bet I could hone my Boker using a piece of that Mountain"

Tread carefully my friend........

 Hilarious, but not far from the truth!

LoLook have tried nagura slurry on glass. Does not work too well.

Nice Boker. Your really going to like it once its properly honed.

What antique store did you score that at if you don't mind sharing? I'm down in Coal City, there are slim pickings down this way.

I live in rolling meadows, just north of woodfield mall. The shop is called Oakton Street Antique Center. They had probably thirty or so straights,a few DEs and a bunch of SEs. Not sure on most of the brands of the straights, I just picked the first reputable one I knew of, and it came from the $15 box too! The prices vary up to about $80. Here's the address:

2430 East Oakton Street, Arlington Hts
