Bought my first GEM today. Being new to DE/SE shaving I know very little about these razors. But I have the razor bug, and I found a deal so.... yeah you know how it is.
That would be a pat 1912 you must use shaving blades not hardware store ones there's carbon steel and coated stainless those are your blade choices pal treet gem blue star are carbon and gem markets a stainless blade or it can be bought in bulk boxes of 100 the carbon steel are sharper but will rust if not dried the stainless are smoother and will last longer
That same type was my first SE--found in a gardening shed at an estate sale and bought for 50 cents. So congratulations--they are great shavers.
Just get your blades at the drugstore and go light on the pressure. It took me a few days to get used to an SE, so you might lose a pint or two before you get the hang of it.
Wow nice find!!! I fell in love with the GEM's about week 2 of using my OCMM. Now I have 7 SE's and counting. Just remember the angle is VERY different from DE's, and once you master it, you'll love it!
I think I'm doing something right so far. I showed my sweet dear wife the GEM when she got home from work tonight, she was very taken with the art of the razor. When I told her there were 3 other razors in the shop that were also very cool, she says " Well you're gonna wait until the weekend so I can go with you when you BUY those razors, right?"... i was like ...." Uh yes my dear, I thought that would make a nice afternoon for us.".....(her big smiles) " Cool, I love those old timey razors!".....hmmmm, usually these things don't turn out good for me, but if I can keep her interested in the art of the razors and good smelly stuff, I may be able to build up a nice little collection before she gets tired of it !
You found a great razor! My first SE razor was an ER 1912 identical to yours, but gold. They give incredible shaves! Ever since using mine, I haven't picked up a DE razor. I am all SE now. Congrats to you!

Yup, the first shave can be frustrating, mine was. So follow the above advice and do not get discouraged if things are not great right away. I will try my new GEM again in a week or so. Congrats.
