Schick Injector J advice...

After getting some advice here in regards to injector razors, I picked up the following Schick Injector J series (I believe it's the J series) set for $20. I have a couple questions.

Is this a Schick J series razor?

Did I get a pretty good deal?

Is this razor a good choice for someone new to wet shaving? ie: how aggressive is this razor? Am I good to go ahead and use it now or should I wait to use it after I've gained more experience with wet shaving?

What's the easiest way to find the correct angle for shaving with this razor?

Are Schick Injector blades the best choice to use with this razor?

What advice would you give me as I go into using an injector razor for the first time?

Thank you in advance for the help!

Great buy! Looks like it is in great shape AND in an original container.

Nice comfortable razor, very good efficiency. More efficient than the later models. Nice balance. And super cool looking. I use the sChick blades in the yellow packaging readily available from several online sources. Good, sharp blades. (Commonly referred to here as "sChick" as they are manufactured in China.

No need to wait. This is a great razor to get going with. Just use the face of the razor to guide the angle and you should enjoy some awesome shaves. Congrats and ENJOY.

Go ahead, just know that injectors shave differently than other safety razors.

What's the easiest way to find the correct angle for shaving with this razor?

They shave very, very shallow. Put the flat face against your skin, then rotate then handle down just a few degrees and pull forward. That's it. Do not add pressure and keep it very shallow. Injectors give a great shave, enjoy!

One of my favorite razors is my J. It cost me a bit less than what you paid but it isn’t in nearly as nice shape as yours is. The Schick blades in the orange/yellow package work just fine. They are readily available online and you can find them in some convenience stores or small pharmacies, sometimes. Injectors tend to be less likely to wound you than double edge razors. You can cut yourself, but not real easily.

Awesome...glad to hear that I did great with my purchase. I figured the three blade cartridges that it came with were worth at least $20 and the razor looked in pretty good shape to me.

Thanks for advice on finding the correct angle. I used a Leaf Twig yesterday and it was easier to find the right angle with it (compared to the Rockwell 6C, Parker Variant, and Gillette Super Speed that I've tried) so I'm hoping this Schick will be as easy or even easier.

I'm excited to get it and give it shot!

I appreciate your input!

That's great to know. Thank you for making me aware of that and your advice on getting the correct shaving angle. No extra pressure and keep it very shallow....got it!

I'm glad to hear that. I'm really looking forward to it so I hope it ships quickly!

That's awesome to hear! Yeah, not being really familiar with the Schick razors at the time, I was sort of taking a leap of faith on this razor. As I mentioned above, I figured the three blade cartridges were worth about $24 so I didn't think $20 for everything was too bad.

Thank you for the advice on the blades. I feel much better knowing that the injectors will be "safer" for me as a beginner to wet shaving!

One question I do have that I didn't think about until I watched a video about the Schick Injector series: With DE razors, and even my Twig, I can take the blades out and wash/alcohol/dry them and have them ready to go for the next shave. Since you don't take the injector blades out until you're ready to move on to a new blade, how do you clean them and do they rust staying in the razor between shaves?

Again, I appreciate all of your input and help. I can't wait to get started with my Schick Injector J!

I had many of the same questions here:

Leave the blade in between uses, that is how it is meant to be used. If you are desperate to clean the interior where the blade sits then some dental tape or floss works very well.

I would highly recommend that you not use the vintage blades that are included with your razor, I’ve tried a few of the old blades and have never had one that was usable. Just buy some new ones. The Schick blades are very good, I’ve used a lot of them over the years, but I prefer the Personna brand. I have one Schick left and after it’s done with I am sticking to the Personna blades exclusively.

Most guys leave the blades in but I remove them after every use because I have a lot of injectors and never use the same one twice in a row and I don’t want a bunch of razors setting around with blades in them. Some guys vapor lock at the idea of removing the blades but I’ve done it hundreds of times and still have all of my fingers, you just have to load it into a dispenser and then reinsert it into a razor. If you just have one injector I’d suggest just leaving it in, they’re stainless and won‘t rust.

Be careful when you load the blade to not let it slide across the blade stops, it doesn’t take much to ruin the edge.

Thank you very much for the link and your reply. I'll definitely read through all of that information tonight.

I appreciate the clarification about leaving the blades in. It's good to know that if I use it at as my sole razor (ie: don't leave it three+ weeks without use) that I won't have to worry about taking it out or it getting rust on it.

Thank you for the advice on the blades. I couldn't tell if they were vintage blades or just blades he was adding to the auction to go with the razor.

If the Schick is as good as I've been reading, it will probably be my go to razor. I'll probably start out comparing it to a Leaf Twig and a Gillette Super Speed TTO just to see the differences.

Thanks for letting me know the blades won't rust and especially the warning of not letting the blade slide across the stop...that's the kind of information I would have never thought about. You are a life saver.

I'll see about ordering some new blades immediately. Thanks for your input on the Schick vs Personna blades. Are the Personna ones called "Persona Mini Hair Sharper Blades" or are these for a different type of injector razor?

That was what I was going to research next, but I'll go ahead and ask it here:
What is everyone's favorite injector blade?

Again, thank you all for taking the time to respond. Really looking forward to shaving with the Schick!

No, mini hair shaper are different.

Blade choices are limited, but I like that. I have only used the sChicks. People speak well of the Supply Co. blades. I am not sure if they are Personna, but the only other blade I really know about are Ted Pella. They get mixed reactions.

The mini hair shaper blades will work, I’ve used several dispensers of them, the problem is that the dispenser doesn’t have the key that is inserted into the razor so the blades have to be loaded into a keyed dispenser. It’s a very simple process.

The “Ted Pella” blades are made by Personna, Ted Pella is a company that supplies medical tissue sampling equipment, which includes various types of blades. The Personna dispenser has a white plastic outer shell that is a bit of a weak spot. They are known to occasionally break, I’ve had a couple over the years that separated, I just transferred the blades to a different dispenser.

What everyone says is their favorite blade is really not important, the only thing that matters is what works for you and the only way to know is try them yourself.

Thanks for clarifying that!

It looks like the three brands I can have to me by the time my razor arrives are the Schick Yellow/Orange pack, the Supply Black Label, and the Parker Chrome. Right now I'm leaning towards the Schick or the Supply...just based on opinions I've read on other posts.

Thanks for everyone's input!

I would recommend the Schick blades, at least to start. The Supply injector is plastic and the key does not fit into at least some Schick razors. To get started with your razor the Schick blade injector would be easier and simpler.
Excellent advice - I just placed my order for a couple Schick blade cartridges! It looks as though they will arrive before my razor, which has now been delayed and won't arrive until next Monday.

I appreciate everyone's help - I'll let you know how my first shave turns out next week!

I received my vintage Schick Injector Series J razor yesterday and it looks very nice for $20. It smelled a little "old", but with some dishwashing detergent, an old toothbrush, and some alcohol, it cleaned up (smelled up?) nicely. My Schick blades are coming in on Friday (you all were right, the ones that came with it were as old as the razor...so I definitely wasn't going to use them).

I'm new to wet shaving and have never owned an injector razor. Does this one look like it should in order to be safe to use (ie: everything lines up as it should and appears to be in perfect working order)?

I have an oval and an arrow in one of the pics - this is the way it is supposed to look because that's the side the blades are injected into, correct?

I just want to make sure everything is as it should be before I put a blade in it and start shaving.

Thanks for everyone's advice and help!

It looks like it is in great shape. Yes, you insert the key of the injector into the side you circled. Take a bit of extra care in loading the first blade, because it doesn't have a blade in it now, the fresh blade could rub on blade stops at the ends of the safety bar. If it does, that can damage the edge of the blade and it would not be usable.

Thank you very much for letting me know that the razor looks, and will work, as it should. Thank you also for the advice on putting in that first blade. When I received it there was a blade in it but I took it out because I wanted to make sure I cleaned it thoroughly and was able to get to every nook and cranny with alcohol. I may just sacrifice one blade in order to be safe - put a blade in and then put another blade in right after it just to make sure I don't start out using a damaged blade.

Again, I appreciate your response!
