What's new

Face lathered for the first time today. A new beginning?

I've been wetshaving on and off for a couple years now(when not wetshaving i was keeping a short scruffy look with an electric trimmer, never went back to carts :001_cool:) and my lather has always been the toughest/most potentially disappointing aspect for me. I've always bowl lathered and with my hard water, my lather has been hit and miss. I always get excited reading about, then buying or ordering new soaps or creams and can not wait to try them out, however when i finally do use them I often find myself disappointed. My most consistent results/successes have come from my TOBS Sandalwood and Eton College, but unfortunately they irritate my face. I love the performance and scents, but my skin just does not agree with them. :thumbdown I decided with the hard water and my success with TOBS, i'd order some of the popular creams to try, for the most part in their scents for sensitive skin, and am awaiting their arrival.

Now to cut to the chase; after reading some threads about face lathering late last night, I planned on giving it a try today. Today i was feeling quite nostalgic and planned to superlather Williams and Proraso cream, which were my first couple purchases and saw regular use as a superlather in my beginning months. I don't know if it's just the fact that it was my first wetshaving product or what, but i absolutely love the scent of Williams! I figured i'd load the brush with Williams, then rub some Proraso into my whiskers and lather up. It didn't exactly go as planned though, when i was loading the Williams with my new to me silvertip, which obviously doesn't have the backbone of my first and only other brush, my omega boar(which hasn't seen any action since i've felt the silvertip on my face :biggrin1:), I just kept loading, and loading, and loading. The soapy water/prelather was running off into a bowl in the sink and I rubbed it into my face before putting the brush to my face and lathering up. I had a great, 2 pass shave(don't want to shave too close or I can't shave tomorrow!) with Williams.

Yes, that's right, with Williams, no superlather as i had originally planned. This is coming from a guy who has a hard time lathering Tabac...

I think I am now a face latherer. This has inspired my to go back through all of my current products, one by one, maybe two shaves with each before moving on to the next. I am going to completely rediscover my lather and ultimately, my shave. Tomorrow I will have another go with Williams, then Wilkinson sword blue soap on Thursday. After that I'll move up in popularity(quality?) and go through Tabac soap, TOBS even though they often irritate me, Proraso, and my newly aquired Nivea and RSC creams. I can't wait!

Sometimes I like to be a story teller.

Yes, it just might be a new beginning. I made the switch to face lathering about 3 years ago when I got my 1305. Didn't really plan it, but it just seemed to work out that way, and there's no looking back. Ever since I discovered how great it is to face lather, I don't think I've mixed up more than 2 or 3 bowl lathers (just for old-times sake) in the last 3 years.

You mentioned you have hard water ... go get a bottle of distilled water from the supermarket for about $1 ... you only need about 4 ounces for each shave to soak your brush, and that bottle will last you about a month. Give it a try with some of those hard to lather soaps, and I think you'll be astounded at what they can do.

face lathering is the best, maximize exfoliation and whisker lift..

Why let your bowl have all the fun?? :)

I mentioned I was planning on using each product twice before moving on to the next... Maybe i'll go first day tap water, second day distilled! Thanks, I think that's what i'm going to try. The real hard part will be actually going through all my products as planned even if/when my new products show up!

Here! Here! Face lathering is one of the true luxuries of wet shaving; building a slick, thick lather right on your face and allowing it to spend even more time doing it's good work. Couple it with a really good brush and it's just bliss.
Wait till you try some of the iconic Italian soaps like Cella or Vitos; heaven...

I'm thinking that once you try the distilled water on the second day, you won't go back to tap water ever again. Soft water makes a HUGE difference in whipping up lather, no matter what brand of soap or cream or brush you may be using that day. But don't take my word for it. Try it for yourself. You'll see.

I'm planning on giving face lathering a go for the first time tomorrow evening, as I just got a couple great shave sticks in the mail from West Coast Shaving along with my B&B boar brush! Just can't decide if I want to try Palmolive classic or La Toja first...

I'll definitely get back to you on that. I don't know if i could get around to using an electric kettle in the bathroom everyday, but we'll see how it goes.

Decisions decisions!

You may need to reload the brush/your face with the boar if you're going for multiple passes. Don't forget to squeeze all the lather out of your brush for the final pass- that's the best lather regardless of what product you're using!

I face lather Mitchell's Wool Fat (which is the preferred method for mwf), and it's friggin awesome. There's nothing like watching and listening to that lather build as fast as it does on your face...

And MWF, and EJ Seabuckthorn, and Proraso in the summer....

Facelathering is great IMHO! Silvertip on your face...

To the OP: you should now join The Official Face Latherers Club-United (TOFLAC-U)! You're welcome!!

I'm not sure how it happened but i have found myself face lathering for the last couple of months after always being a bowl latherer. I can't see myself going back to the bowl now.

I face lathered today with Cella and an SOC. Which is odd, because I normally never face lather because the extra exfoliation can irritate my face, but I just had the urge come over me. Results were great. I may do this more often.

I have super hard water where I am, and face lathering has allowed me to build a better and more consistent lather. I've discovered since then that I prefer brushes that have a bit of scritch and backbone over super soft and floppy brushes. It's made a world of difference.

Thanks for the input. I've tried my boar once after getting my silver tip and didn't even finish the shave with it lol, love the soft badger.
