What's new

Downside to buying a 1kg block of soap.scent? (anyone fix this with storage?

I know soap can go bad if left in some poor places, but I am talking about scent degradation and not something turning bad/rancid.

I saw people comparing the red tub Cella to the 1kg Cella (I think people preferred the 1kg version though), and as I was noticing that the Cella I have is a lot less strong in scent than the RR I have (which is a lot newer). I got the Cella from a member who broke it off his 1kg block, and I split the RR 1kg block with another member only much more recently. I've stored both of mine the same (both are now in the RR-style tubs) yet the RR has a much stronger scent, it's very noticeable. I am assuming this is due to storing the soap for an extended (few months?) period of time, I fully expect the RR to have the same issue. I wouldn't say the scent has gone down like an Arko left unwrapped, but maybe half of that...

I don't think the Cella was stored poorly, I just think that as the Cella ages it probably loses some of it's scent. Maybe it stops and only loses some smell, but I still thought it was interesting. Definitely a reason to help with AD's since you are probably better off getting a smaller amount of soap and getting the "full" scent that hasn't worn off.

I guess this is also interesting to me because most people say that these 1kg bricks are fine in a cabinet away from any extreme temperature changes, humidity etc. and I think mine were fine as far as the storage recommendations go. But then I'm wondering if the "overkill" by putting it in the fridge/freezer may be less of an overkill if it helps retain more scent than room temperature storage. Anyone store these soaps (or others) in both room temperature and a fridge/freezer and have any thoughts on this? Too bad my fridge/freezer is pretty small, I think an experiment of different storage methods would be interesting (although it would probably take a few months-1 year until the scent starts going maybe, I don't really know how old the Cella is since I was just given a chunk).

I honestly can't answer your question but can assure you that just because the scent is gone doesn't mean the soap has spoiled. I have Tabac and Arko that I left open to air in my bathroom and let the scent disappear and they still lather up and shave just fine. In the case of Tabac allowing the scent to dissipate makes for a better shave as the FO used also dissipates and no longer stings on weepers. Arko took about two weeks and Tabac took about a month for its scent to dissipate.

Enjoy the shaves! I hear Cella is second to almost none in its lathering qualities (I need to order some someday to try).

Too many soaps are considered "the best" from the reviews and I have been disappointed before. I think it's very subjective, although I do love Cella who knows what you'll settle on (if you ever do settle!)
