Phoenix Artisan Doppelganger Soap is fantastic

Curious about the brand, I did some searching here and there are surprisingly few posts about the company, but several threads mysteriously mention "the company has a lot of history around here" and "do a google search". Well the controversy is not easy to search for, and nobody seems to want to link to any controversial stuff, so as the famous line in the movie goes, regarding any controversy, "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn." I couldn't find it.

On a lark (I don't know how I came across it, and I've never used anything from PAA before), I ordered a tub of Doppelganger Grey (Creed Aventus homage) the matching alcohol splash and an Amber Aero Lite synth brush. So, today, I went all-in on the shave, since it's a holiday. Leisurely shower, used Pro Raso red pre-shave cream, then the PAA soap with the PAA brush, AL13M (AKA ++). I was, quite literally, gobsmacked at the results. This has put the fun back into shaving for me again.

And I always thought I was a pretty much a tallow guy. I have never been impressed with soaps like Pre de Provence (in fact I'm PIFfing some with a razor soon) finding it to be mediocre, at best. I really did not research the CK6 Formula, and had no idea if it was tallow or vegan, turns out it is not tallow. WOW! I will have to alternate this with Cella red, one of my top 5 soaps (tallow base), for a few days, but I think this soap may actually be its equal. I wasn't expecting that.

By the way, I'm not militant about using tallow soaps, I've used non-tallow soap bases I like a lot (RR Santa Maria del Fiore). But it's been my experience that I prefer tallow bases to non-tallow about 4-1. I don't pre-judge a soap based on ingredients, I just try stuff I read good reviews about and see if I like it. I've read that Stirling's Executive Man (tallow) is maybe a better Creed Aventus homage scent, but since I've never had Creed Aventus in my den, I wouldn't know. I do love Stirling's Sharp Dressed Man (Creed Irish Tweed homage). That, and this, now, are probably my two favorite scents.

Anyway, I don't know how it caught my eye, but I ordered it, and was very, very pleasantly surprised by it's performance. His CK6 soap base is a winner in my book.

Update: Well, I still don't know what the original controversy with PAA was, but I did find a post by someone who got a bad batch of soap from them and they did not replace it, which is a stupid way to run a business, but the world is full of stupid people, I guess.

Of more concern, I read that the proprietor was removed from B&B some time ago, and I have the utmost respect for the moderators around here, this is, perhaps, the best moderated forum I've ever been on, so no doubt the guy was a problem child.

Anyway, I don't want to endorse the business after that. However, I must say the soap surprised me a lot, in a good way. I'll leave it at that. This is definitely not an endorsement of the business, and any vendor that gets tossed out here, was surely tossed for good reason, so there is probably good reason for caution. My experience, nonetheless, was not problematic.

There are plenty of great soaps out there, and since I've read in several places Stirling's Executive Man may be a better scent, and it's a good business run by a nice guy, there's that.

I've the following tallow based varieties: Stirling unscented and Sudsy Soapery Twisted Rose (love both of these.) At first I didn't quite grok the Stirling and that was user error. I shaved with it last night and really like the soap a good deal. Every soap has some kinda quirk.

I've two PAA brushes (Amber Aerolite and Doppler), 2 CK6 soaps (unscented and Cane), as well the pre-shave cube 2.0 (non-menthols/unscented.)

I conquer the CK6 formula is really quite good and the added slick from the pre-shave cube really makes even more difference (at least for me, especially on the first past.)

Of the two brushes I prefer the size of the Doppler, which I didn't at first.

Can't comment on the other part of your post: the controversy, though I can see/sense there is some. Somewhere in researching supplies to get, I may have stumbled upon a similarly negative review.

That said, I purchased a slant/comb razor from them, emailed the head had developed spider cracks around the post nut and they replaced the razor lickety-split, no fuss, no muss. I've had rather positive experiences with multiple purchases thus far.

Shave on Garth!

The above was another controversy, completely unrelated to PAA.

Anyway, the guy may be a jerk, but he makes good soaps. Simply because I think so highly about this forum, I doubt I'll order from him again in the future. Too many good vendors out there.

But I have to give his soap props. It deserves it.

That's the right attitude! You aren't expected to research a business's seedy past and make a careful deliberation based on that. You buy the product and you like it or you don't and that's that. Maybe you decide that you don't want to support him any further, but throwing products out would be silly. I know all about his past, but I am not saying a word because he doesn't need publicity.

I believe it’s the same guy, before he changed the company name to PAA. I’ll throw in that I have a couple of PAA products and have no complaints.

Edit: good to see you back, John.

Every single PAA product I've used has ranged from very good to phenomenal. Their razors have more thought put into the small details than most. They have contributed a great deal to this niche little hobby of ours.

I've made mistakes in the past, especially when I was battling opioid addiction. Fortunately most* people seem pretty reasonable and judge me for who and what i am today.

If you peruse reddit r/wicked_edge and the likes where PAA is always crushed to death you'll get more info. Since i don't pay much attention to what other people write about and use my own experience to form an opinion about products- i've sampled a bunch of the splashes/scents and flat out didn't like the formula so i won't buy more. Nothing to do with any past drama for me- just don't like the product. I do appreciate PAA for re-introducing some classic scents from a bygone era which you cannot easily obtain in the wet shaving world anymore- and they make them available in various formats- which is a very good thing.

Excellent analysis.
I've had several different sets from PAA and still have a handful. The main reason I've whittled it down to a handful over the last 12 months is I started trying higher end soaps like Ethos and Aion, leaving PAA in the dust performance and post shave. I will say they do have some interesting scents but a lot of it's marketing and his website always leaves me with a nascent migraine with all the graphics and layout.
I do use the preshave Cube's tho...they really are pretty good, and the aftershave splashes have staying power that is unrivaled by few.
That said, I knew about the shenanigans he had pulled off some time ago after I had bought several sets. Once I knew that it did curtail my desire to get much else at that point.

@Barbarian80 I have not tried a lot of premium soaps, but you seem to have sampled a wide variety and are a discriminating user. I tend to like the classics, like Cella red (original) and Tabac (tallow, still have 3 pucks). I like some of the Razorock varieties (Don Marco is a favorite summer soap).

I probably won’t purchase from PAA again, but I love this Aventus homage scent. In your opinion is the Stirling Executive Man (maybe not a “premium” soap, but seems well regarded in this community) a better product when it comes time to replace this? Or do you have another recommendation for this scent?

I’m a fan of Stirling’s Sharp Dressed Man, and this PAA soap is right up there. I’ll probably reload with Executive Man unless you suggest something else. Thanks!

If you like Aventus then I would suggest Ethos Succes.

One of the few companies I will never buy from or use their products regardless of how good they are.

I was around during the fiasco and have strong military ties, so I can't let that one slide.

I'll forgive the guy but I won't forget it.

...

Same guy. He had 3-4 companies running at the same time (HTGAM, PPF, PAA)

I have made a few purchases before becoming aware of the past drama... Maybe the heat was getting to him - It's a brisk 43*C today - I've been in Casa Grande in September when I worked for Abbott - OMG the hottest place on freaking Earth, that was...

I can tell you that I've had zero issues with my past orders (+Military Discounted) and the PAA CK6 formula rocks!

When I was testing the waters on synthetics, I decided to try their Peregrino and Amber Aerolite - which perform wonderfully for me to this day - Well, for as long as I allow myself to enjoy using a non-natural brush that is...

But I won't be buying anything from them (or anyone else) due to GRUYERE 🍺

Their PAA Artifact razor is crazy good. I do not want to support the company because of past behavior but I agree, I'm floored by one of their products and don't mind talking about it once in a while. I won't purchase anymore of their products but the one I did buy I do not regret.

Which is a shame.
