What's new

Dovo quality

Great stuff.

Not to take this off topic, but steps 1-5, if not all the steps, do not look that complicated, nor high-tech/refined. That is why I personally think GD razors perform just as well as any other out there. It's not rocket science, just simple metalworking.

OK, so maybe they skip the step where the guy straightens out the tang....:001_rolle

Interesting video, I'd seen the old one but not the new one.

"... eighty different steps to manufacture a straight razor"

Or in my case, eighty different steps to manufacture a not-so-straight razor that has a slightly warped blade and a cheapo plastic handle - not what I expected for just under $200.

Thanks DOVO, you won't sucker me again! Once burnt - not going back.

I like the old blades that are restored but are there any modern manufacturers that would be recommended. Of course I'd love a razor fully made by Bill but it's a little out of my league - at the moment:001_smile

What is the quality of modern TI's like in comparison to DOVO?

That's the pits; I guess I got lucky.
I have two Dovo's, a Dovo special and a Renascence. Both are excellent razors.

i think a big concern is that one guy in the Dovo New he is straighten the razos, he looks that he doesnt care and remember he knows his work is being filmed.

I have 3 Dovo straights. And love all three of them. Thanks for posting i always wanted to watch one being made.

Well, I started with a Dovo Best Quality but have used that only about twice and then dulled the edge and used it to practice honing.
I have 4 other Dovo's and several TI's and all the newer TI's feel a lot better quality and put together better overall. My Dovo Bismarck had some goldwash worn off on the tang when it came brand new, the perlex isn't kind of lose and the blade isn't centred,

I think TI's have nicer steel and feel smoother than Dovo's (both historic steel TI and carbonsong TI's)

I just realized I still have not even tried one of my Dovo's the prima klang

Hi,

I must be lucky - all my Dovos (Best, Special, EnVogue, Prima Klang, Berg Lowe) have had straight, well finished blades and have been excellent shavers :001_smile

Have fun !

Best regards

Russ

Thanks for the videos! I have to say, however, that I am with all the gents who are pro-Dovo. I have a Best Quality and it shaves wonderfully.

Hi Folks,

I have the chance to buy a DOVO straight razor. Are they worth the money? And what models are recommended?

I just got a Dovo Black Star with some quality issues. Blade was so off center it rub the scales when closing. Also the finish wasn't up to my standards; the black coating on the spine was splotchy at best, gold wash wasn't perfect. Someone had an off day...
Of course I ordered this un-honned, so I was the 1st person to lay hands on this razor since it left the Dovo warehouse. Just disappointing....
The vendor appologized, even though it's not their fault and paid for the return shipping. Another razor is on its way to me now. I'll let you know how it works out. Probably should have had them inspect it before sending it to me, maybe they did.

I had a Dovo Renasaince, and have a Dovo #41 stainless, and they are top notch shavers. Smooth and fantastic.

I have also had experience with three brand new 5/8 stainless Dovos that had warped blades. All bent the same way.

Somewhere out there on the interweb there is an article that in the past few years production volume at Dovo has gone up by a factor of seven, if I recall the figure correctly. Methinks the QC due to the higher volume is not quite what it once was.

But if you do get a good one (which is probably more likely than not), they are very, very nice!

I have avoided buying Dovo as I have heard about the quality issues on the modern ones. I picked up a NOS vintage one (Fritz Bracht era) and while the blade quality is excellent (and a heck of a good shaver), the scales are the cheapest I've seen with shoddy pinning to boot. If they've gone downhill from that, I can't imagine it would even stay together!
