What's new

didn't know you can't nuke tallow soap

of course I look things up after the fact, my Col. Conk and Ogallala melted like butter into my wooden bowls, then I created a monster with the Caswell Massey.:crying:

It is ruined?

Yes, but then again Caswell Massey is a pretty bad soap to begin with, so you're not out much.

In fact, this may be one case where what looked to be bad fortune turned out to be good fortune.

+2

I was going to say, if you absolutely HAD to ruin a soap, that'd be the one to ruin. :w00t:

Someone needs to post a sticky on melting soaps...this comes up a lot whenever someone wants to fit a milled/non-glycerin soap into a certain container, you always get a couple guys jumping in telling them to melt it in the microwave.

I admit, I do use a microwave. And I am a soaper.

You have to be cautious though. Don't set the micro at a minute and a half and go outside for a smoke.

10 - 12 seconds and it's soft enough to compact. If you throw it in the microwave and wait for it to liquify, you're living dangerously.

Melt tallow soaps in a double heavy duty ziplock bag in a pot of water on a very slight simmer... after milling/grating them.

you mean like this one - within the soap sticky list?

That article doesn't explain why you can't melt milled soaps. That needs to be at the top of the page, so people know exactly why grating certain kinds of soap is necessary.

I second that! and yes, I tried to melt just a regular house soap and that was an interesting experiment :biggrin1:

I've always been able to mill the soap and make it conform to the container. I've melted some glycerin soaps in the microwave, but will probably use a double boiler method in the future.
