What's new

I can't quit you!

Not what you guys think lol. Seriously though, I recently purchased a Feather A/C DX and can't seem to stop using it. I'll share a little bit of my journey. I've been shaving with a DE for close to the last 30 years, the last 15 with a Merkur Futur. After stumbiling across this forum after a very long hiatus and seeing all the new (since I last bought a DE) and different razors out there, I thought to myself, "treat yo'self." And I did! I purchased a beautiful Timeless .95 SS with open comb and scalloped head. It's a stunning razor, and I've been impressed at how good, and how close the shaves are for a fixed gap DE.

Enter my age old curiosity. I've always wanted to try a straight, but I've been apprehenslve because, well, they call them cut-thorat razors for a reason. I also wasn't sure I wanted to commit to the stropping and honing, or sending it off to be honed etc. What can I say, I like instant gratification, so I started researching disposable blade straights/shavettes. I was looking at Feather and Kai as they, to me anyway, were the closest thing to a straight without going that direction. I ended up getting the Feather DX folder/Western style with wooden scales, a very elegant and aestheitically pleasing instrument.

I started using it with Feather Pro-Guard blades. I paid very close attention to angle, but felt like the guards were preventing me from getting a good shave. Next I tried the professional blades, and shockingly, I only knicked myself once. The blades gave a very close shave, but man were they harsh. I got some serious razor rash, similar to what I experienced years ago when trying their DE blades. I know some love those blades, but I guess they just don't play nice with my skin type.

Enter Kai blades. I got some of the "Pink Mild" blades, and wow! what a difference! Very close, irritation free shave. I felt though that it could be closer still, so I ordered the Kai Captains, which offer greater blade exposure. I felt like I was having to angle the razor spine a little too much with the Milds to get the blade to bite into my stuble. So yesterday I received the Captains. I grabbed my tube of Proraso Blue, whipped up a nice rich lather in my lather bowl (not enough to shave the whole street like we see on some YouTube channels), applied it with my nicely broken in Semogue OC boar hair brush, and went at it. WOW! An even closer shave than I got with the Pink Milds. I didn't think that was possible. I shave daily, so I told myslef yesterday that today I'd shave with the Timeless to show it some love. I couldn't do it though. The Feather beckoned me. It looked at me longingly with it's beautiful wood scales and precisely Japanese engineered 316 SS hardware. I tried reaching for the Timeless, but my hand went for the Feather. After the shaves I've been getting with this thing, I don't know if I'd ever want to use a DE again. I know I eventually will, but getting the shaves that I have been, it's hard to want to shave with anything else.

I've been a daily DE/SE shaver for a bit now and I have a pretty nice collection. But I've hardly touched them since I started SR shaving!

This is addictive and I've pretty much been doing it daily since I started a couple of weeks ago. The only time I've gone back to safety razors is once to give my face a chance to heal up from some of the tiny nicks and scratches I've given myself while learning to shave with a SR. And if I need BBS, I still have to go back to safety razors, because I'm not there yet with a SR.

But, I think once I get to the BBS stage with a SR, it will dominate my rotation.. it's just very cool.

Sounds like we started around the same time. It’s definitely fun, and I’ve only gone back to a DE for reasons similar to what you mentioned. I’m at a point now where I’m getting close shaves. I’m typically a one pass shaver (one pass and touch-ups) and I can’t believe how close the shaves are with a single pass compared to a DE. That said, I find myself doing at least two with the SR because it’s just so damn fun. Takes the BBS to a whole other level. Now I understand what the SR guys have been raving about all these years. For me, a big part of using a SR is the nostalgia. Takes me back to all the westerns I used to watch as a kid, watching the cowboys getting shaved in the barbers chair.

Are you using a traditional straight, or disposable blade/shavette type? I’m at a point now where I’m trying to settle on a blade. I’ve used the feather pro guards, pros, Kai “PINK” milds, and Kai Captains. Kai Captains have been the best so far, followed by the feather pros, though I can only use the feathers with Proraso Blue for sensitive skin or they give me razor rash. Have some Schlick Pro-Lines coming. Hopefully will have them by the weekend.

I went with the straight razor.

I wanted to hone and strop! It's part of the fun and I wanted to go all in. There are no worries about blades and blade types and which ones work or not. Definitely no worries about irritation! As bad as my first shaves were, there was zero irritation! My shaves are getting closer, but they're not BBS yet. But that's coming.

I'd say try a traditional SR, you'll love it.o

@Dimitri

I would suggest you to get a Weck sextoblade razor from ebay and some Persona Hair shaper blades. This shavette combo is very similar to a straight razor. Don't browse Aliexpress as and might end buying other shavettes. Personally I have bought 5 from there and 3 were excellent; for example the Dx clone.

I recently pick up a Feather Kamasori SR. And I was blown away of how close and comfortable my shave was. I started with the Feather guarded blades. I recent switched to the Kai guarded blades and they are smoother than the Feather. But I have the same problem; I can't put the SR down. A bbs shave with a SR is on a whole new level. I'm still learning. But I now see the appeal of a SR. I can't see myself going to a traditional SR. I'm just lazy when it comes to the honing thing.

Exactly why I went with an Artist Club razor. Closest thing to a SR without the commitment to all the other stuff. I’d like to one day, there are some straights out there I really like, but I have way too little free time as it is and I can see it becoming a chore instead of an enjoyable hobby. Maybe one day, but not right now.

How long have you been using it? I’m curious how many shaves your blades are lasting for. I read about some guys getting 10 or 20 shaves per blade. I’m getting like 4.

I've only had this razor for 2-3 weeks. I have not put enough shaves on it to gage blade life. I was up to 6 shaves when I pulled the Feather for the Kai blade. My facial hair is thin.

Many people like to use this Schick Proline blade.

I just used one for the first time yesterday, and again today. So far, I think it might be my favorite, with the Kai Captain blade being a very close number two. The beauty with the Schicks is that you can order them from sellers in Japan for ~$100 shipped for a case of 300 blades. That comes out to about 33 cents a blade, or 10 bucks per 30 blade dispenser, vs 25-30 bucks per dispenser from U.S. vendors.

Nice razor. Which feather model is that? It looks like it's chrome plated. I don't think they make a chrome plated one currently.

Rarely seen, Feather Professional 60 Razor,
It is chrom plated on brass alloy.

This is someone else's photo, maybe it only appears in Japan.

I think the Feather Artist series especially SR & DX look the closest to a real straight and I'm kicking around the idea of trying one but in my mind it's still not a real straight. I really would like to try a straight but like others I don't know if I'm up for extra equipment and time to maintain.
