I lost another Preppy with a converter and another Ahab and busted my Pelikano Jr. What are people's thoughts on an affordable vintage fountain pen desk pen? Good quality, things to avoid, etc. Obviously I can't be trusted to go further than my desk with anything other than a Super Sharpie.

I have a Sheaffer's desk pen that I just inked up. You'll certainly need some room to place it. Mine is kind of crowding my smallish computer desk. But I will always have a pen handy here.
Jumping on this thread to follow. Just rearranged my desk and office and would like to get a desk set. Any suggestions always appreciated.
As soon as I can find a gasket, that same Esterbrook inkwell will be functional. It currently is on my desk.
This old Sheaffer desk pen works for me.
I was very fortunate to find this one. The nib is like a very smooth MB.
I have a Parker 21/51 (can't determine which) desk set with a stone base. I love having a pen handy on the desk for quick notes.

If you are breaking and losing all these pens, is it a good idea to drop major coin on a desk set?

If it never leaves the desk, it shouldn't get lost. The Pelikano Jr. cap was cheap plastic that cracked so I wrapped it in duct tape.
My Parker 51 desk set is my most used pen.
Some Esterbrooks, I like the red-tail the best.
