Defect?

Hello to all. New guy question: I just purchased a brand new Norton 1000/4000 combo stone. When it arrived I noticed what look like dimples(4 or 5) on the 4000 side. The dimples are the width of the tip of a ballpoint pen, but not very deep. My question is, is this normal and just needs some lapping out of the box?

This is pretty typical for the newer "made in Mexico" Nortons. Lap through or use as is. I'd suggest lapping, they get less gritty after a thorough lapping.

Thanks for the link...I was just about to post about lapping a coticule and ask about what grade of wet/dry paper to use...and I've already got the answer

And if you're using a Norton, you *will* want to lap it on a regular basis.
