December 2019 Gentlemanly Restraint Until Month End (GRUME)

This restraint is for December 1-31, 2019. Sorry this is late!

If you've made no purchases in December, feel free to jump in.

Have what you need and use what you have: that is our definition of "Restraint". The idea is to use, learn about and enjoy what you have, restraining yourself from making frivolous purchases. Care to join us?

This monthly restraint is perfect for those who have failed the yearly or quarterly sabbatical and want to curb their ADs. Keep fighting the urges!

There will be roll calls during the restraint. Check-ins, especially with SOTD info and pics, are encouraged and mutual support is appreciated. :)

All are welcome!

Rules:

1.a. If you were in the November GRUME, 12/1 was your restock date for any needed product.
1.b. Members should have the necessary supplies to last the duration of the Restraint, but this is a Restraint, not a Sabbatical. If something breaks or runs out and you have no suitable or usable replacement, it can be replaced.
2. No personal shaving purchases after 12/1. Members may purchase shaving related items for others to encourage the hobby/lifestyle (PIF or Gifting). Members are not allowed to request any form of compensation in return. Please use your best judgement. Also, no sampling/testing of those gift items.
3. GIFT cards (including eBay bucks, Amazon gift cards, credit card reward points, etc) cannot be redeemed for shaving items, even if the cards were purchased and/or received in previous months.
3.a. The Holiday Rule: Members are not allowed to ask for shaving gear as holiday gifts.
4. Any shaving services, like replating or restorations, cannot be arranged or paid for in the month of the restraint.
5. Feel free to engage in trades (especially with each other), but don't enter any PIFs.
6. If you have to ask, it probably will put you out. That said, this is a Gentlemanly Restraint - use your own best judgement to self-assess based on 1.b., above.

Exceptions:
1. Members may participate in B&B Group Buys or B&B branded shaving item purchases, because these may be limited items and all support this common ground. They must be advertised on behalf of B&B to qualify. In an effort to stay true to restraints commitments, please limit B&B purchases to one (1) shaving item per month, including contributions to B&B! (All Non-Shaving B&B items are fair game.)
2. During the season, Sue Moore Items are all exempt from the-no buying rules. Treewhaling on anything Sue Moore-related is encouraged.
3. Members who are in a Quarterly or Yearly restraint are allowed to exercise their documented exceptions for those restraints without failing the monthly restraint.

Mods:
Please leave this thread in the General Shaving Discussion forum until December 7th so we can get as many as possible to see the Restraint. Afterwards, feel free to move the thread to Brotherhoods and Clubs. Thanks!

Tips:
Check out this Wiki article for tips on how to survive a Restraint. It includes a comprehensive checklist to help you figure out whether you've got everything you need for the month.

I looked at my dwindling piece of alum, and for some reason remembered Montmorency the dog from Three Men in a Boat:
"Oh, that dog will never live. He will be snatched up to the bright skies in a chariot, that is what will happen to him."
After a watching him for a while J "began to think that maybe they’d let him remain on earth for a bit longer, after all."
My alum however small will survive another month. Frankly, I couldn't be bothered to do any shopping.

Very nice - more than I thought we'd get, this being December, and me being late with the thread...
I believe more and more people realize that chasing the [insert latest and greatest here], or the joy of making a purchase, and then owning something new is not a substitute for 15-30 minutes of mindful relaxed shave with focus on technique with small but efficient kit.
Been the former, didn't like it at all.
Wouldn't want to be dangerously boring but I will quote - I promise I won't do it again - from Three Men in a Boat:

"Throw the lumber over, man! Let your boat of life be light, packed with only what you need - a homely home and simple pleasures, one or two friends, worth the name, someone to love and someone to love you, a cat, a dog, and a pipe or two, enough to eat and enough to wear, and a little more than enough to drink; for thirst is a dangerous thing."

That is something that I'm going towards as well. It is enjoyable to stick to what works but it's also enjoyable to try out new equipment that might surprise you in terms of performance. I've been in both ends of surprise where I hate that new gear or it works out well. I definitely have enough to work with so I'll be restraining myself for a while. I also got on the yearly restraint so fingers crossed, no more purchases for a while. :)

I'm in again.
