DE Gilette ID help.....

Hey all,

I came across this old DE at my Mother-In-Law's and I was just wondering if you are able to tell what it is.... It seems like a late 50's Gillette Adjustable. The code underneath, as you can see, is "E 4"..

It seems to function perfectly - and, as you can see, just needs come cleaning/TLC.

Now, I just need to find some blades. The only think local is HERE I am not sure if those are even entry-level. I may have to get some online...

Oh yea, I need to find some decent soap for later (*sigh).....

New, and still learning,

Matt!

It looks like a Fat Boy, and in the last photo, I can barely make out the date code. Looks like it could be E/F 4?

It most definitely is a fatboy! I would probably suggest looking online for blades. I've purchased from westcoastshaving.com very good service and prices. Good luck, and you've come to the right place!

There is no such thing as an "entry level" DE blade. All DE blades are sharp, to varying degrees, with Feathers being the sharpest.

Those blades are likely serviceable. Personna DE blades are typically sold at Wal-Mart, and while they are not most people's favorite blade, they are certainly usable.

$2.29 for 5 blades is rather pricey though. That's .46 cents each. Most DE blades are only .$.10 to $.20 cents each.

Good eye!

Check above, I updated the picture. I cleaned it a bit and magically revealed the E 4 (which from my research, means 1959...not sure what the '4' is yet). I didn't even see that before...

Thanks,

Matt!

Matt,

That means 4th Quarter of 1959 is when that razor was made. It over 50 years old!

You can definitely do better on blade pricing and quality than the blades at Sally's. What part of the world are you in?

By the way, Scrubbing Bubbles, a toothbrush, a good soak and then applying some Maas metal polish will have that looking new in no time.

Thanks for the responses so far...

DunEdInRanger,

I am located in Allen Park, MI - Near Detroit...

Thanks,

Matt!

KQ,

I'm pretty sure you should be able to do better than that pack of blades from Sally's locally.

I would check supermarkets when you go food shopping. Most here carry some sort of DE Blades, with one chain carrying Dorco 300's. If the package says Made in Korea, they are more than likely Dorco's, and if Made in USA, they are made by ASR (American Safety Razor) which makes the Personna brand.

You should really consider snagging a sample pack though.
