What's new

I'm used to my 2011 R41, what's a Slant I should try?

I don't need a new razor, but I really want to try a slant to see if I can get the same closeness and efficiency of my beloved "beast" R41 with perhaps a bit more margin against irritation.

The Merkur 37 seems like the obvious starting point, but if the SuperSlant is really an appreciable upgrade, I'd consider shelling out for one. Which SuperSlant baseplate is comparable to the aggression of an original R41? I assume I could go straight to the open comb, but is this just hubris of experience with an R41 speaking?

I've got a newer R41 as well as an AS-D2, but nothing "sings" like the original. You can tell how close it shaves just by the sound.

I'm not a collector of razors, so I don't want to have 5 or 6 of them. I just want the best for me that I can find.

I'm also in the same boat. I love the R41 and still haven't tried a slant yet. I had considered the super slant, but they're always out of the more aggressive offerings and priced in the same range as other stainless razors. The two I have been looking at are the Rex Konsul and Rex Sentry. I wouldn't mind vintage, but they would be around the same price as well. A cheaper option would be the Timeless slant to try out and the Merkur 37 that you mentioned.

I would say why not try shaving with the R41 in a slanted position? Might give you the best of both worlds without having to adjust your technique.
It can be done two ways. First is the Gillette Slide technique where you hold the razor in a normal position but move it diagonally rather than straight up and down (taking WTG here):

Second is actually tilting the head itself so holding the razor diagonally but moving it in a straight vertical direction (shown sideways below):

I might be willing to give that a go but the first time I tried it-- probably a decade ago now-- I ended up with a neat 2" slice across my cheek when inside of "sliding" the R41 dug in and went laterally. Not entirely a surprise with an R41 v1.0.

That's the problem with the R41-- you either have such shallow glide angle that you aren't getting much slicing action, or are slicing a bit TOO effectively.

I like the idea of the slant because the "slicing" action is built into the head and I don't need to try to wield my R41 with ninja concentration.

If you can shave with the 2011 R41, you can try any slant. Up to the Wunderbar and Superslant L3++ OC.

P.S. my personal favorite is the Timeless Slim .5 OC. Many can only shave every other day with it.
That Timeless looks like an incredible razor, but it's nearly $300 by the time I get the OC and scalloped cap. That's a bit salty for me.

I have some R41's, probably none 2011....bet 2013.... I can do a 2 pass shave, but honestly it feels like it scrapes and pulls irrespective of blade used. Now the RR Wunderbar....2 pass shave...the 1st I don't even feel there is a blade....no irritation and have never had a cut.... For me , it's the best.

If you are a R41 2011 user, Superslant L3++. Either the SB or the OC. You can thank me later. For helping you empty your wallet . 🤣

Another vote for the Wunderbar or the Superslant L3++OC. Well-made, fairly aggressive, capable of stellar performance in the right hands.

I went thru a slant phase a few years ago. I got like ten collecting dust lol

For you with an R41 preference, I'll say Wunderbar over Superslant L3++OC. You might try a Fatip Lo Storto OC for small change as an entry point to slants. Either handle, but I'm a Piccolo fan.

IYHO: can you use the L3++OC every day?

Yeah, I had a Merkur 37, the ATT slant, and the iKon slant. I now have the SuperSlant. I hope this is the winner.
Which one? thoughts?
