What's new

I'm used to my 2011 R41, what's a Slant I should try?

IYHO: can you use the L3++OC every day?

Well, "humble" is not an appelation that is often applied to me. :) Occasionally, though, so I guess I'm getting better.

Yes. It can be an every day shaver. It would be a very efficient every day shaver! As with any razor, there's technique.

I find that it does really well at getting the spots that are often more difficult to smooth out. I'm "polled" :) and don't really have horns though some of my former students would disagree. In the spots where I would have horns I have swirls of stiff hair on top of the intersection of three different angles. Hard to shave at all, let alone well. The L3++OC reduces those quite handily.

However, if you're prone to irritation, skin blemishes and such and normally use a mild razor then you'll want to work up to dailies with this razor. A very light touch works wonders.

O.H.

Many of us LOVE the Fatip Lo Storto Originale, an open comb slant. All plated brass for $40 or so. There's also a safety bar version, called Gentile. My open comb is perfect, but some folks report QC problems. So, if you go this way, it makes sense to buy from a reputable dealer.

He wants something comparable to R41 2011 (post #1). One of the most aggressive razors ever.
Lo Storto Originale is way below in the effectiveness department.

Fair enough. But that criterion isn't always decisive. It depends on user technique. I've never used any version of the R41. But, If I use my FOCS with a Feather or a Kai, or even, say, a GSB, and keep the angle close to riding the cap, the FOCS is very efficient. So, with that caveat, I'm sticking with my recommendation, especially for the price.

I'm realizing that as much as I love the R41 (v1) it really doesn't love me. I also can get some irritation with it. I'm using Nacets I bought into before Russian-made stuff got really awkward and harder to find around Feb of last year.

The main thing I love about the R41 is the efficiency and the feedback. The "sing" of an original R41 is something I've never gotten from anything but a good straight.

The other DD I have in rotation is the AS-D2, which is about as far from the R41 as you can get. As smooth as it is, it's annoying (and irritating in a literal sense) to go over the same parts many, many times. The R41 is single-pass perfection. Which I value enough to live with some mild irritation.

I find myself mostly using the R41 for speed on the straight sections, and AS-D2 for handling in the corners. It's common that I'll use both in a shave.

I think the "medium" aggression Henson might be a good middle ground between these two extremes.

may i present the yaqi top aggressive slant

i had and loved the 2011 R41. This is much better, both in terms of closeness and giving my skin a break. And it costs $10.

Ah yes. I forgot about that one. Meant to buy it. :facep:

At that price, one can hardly not get it just to try and then PIF if you don't like.

Actually it cost me the princely sum of $1.51 SHIPPED. Unbelievable.

If you can shave with the 2011 R41, you can try any slant. Up to the Wunderbar and Superslant L3++ OC.

P.S. my personal favorite is the Timeless Slim .5 OC. Many can only shave every other day with it.
Hi Iridian, your post caught my attention as I already have a Timeless .95 SB and am looking for something with the efficiency of the R41.

In your opinion, would you say the Slim .5 OC is just as efficient as the R41?

Cool and slimy

Yes, both get very close. I prefer the Slim because it is a bit easier to get that BBS without risking an injury. It is also my go-to razor if I find another razor left something a while after shaving, I often even use it dry in that case.

Thanks for your reply, @Iridian.

I’ve tried the Slim SB twice. My first shave was fantastic, but the second gave me razor burn, likely due to its narrow shaving angle. That said, I get consistent BBS with the R41. My only complaint is that the R41 lacks comfort. It’s not that the blade feel bothers me, but it can be a bit 'tuggy,' especially on the first pass, pulling at my hairs sometimes.
