Custom Conversion Job

Okay, so I have an AoS engraved razor that takes gillette heads. Now I don't need a nice Fusion razor. I love this handle so much that I hate seeing it go to waste in the box it came in.

My question is this: would it be possible to somehow cut the top part, containing the cartridge mechanics, off, and thread a hole into the center? I want to convert this into a DE razor, maybe an Old Type head or something.

Thanks,
-Jon

ps I've tried selling this, but there isn't much interest out there. It is unused, in box. I figured I might as well make use of it.
pps it was a gift from awhile ago.

Without a side view, it's hard to tell--is the handle strictly vertical at the point where you'd cut it off? Remember a DE razor is nominally symmetrical. If so, all you need to do after cutting it is drill and tap an appropriate threaded hole for a 3-piece Gillette (the thread dimension escapes me right now).

everything is round and symmetrical and vertical up until the weird cartridge piece

maybe you can see it here

it is a perfect handle, and it would be wonderful to use

PM member cooncatbob and see if he'd be willing to help you out. His work is excellent, and if anybody here could accomplish what you're inquiring about it would be him. You can check out his work here.

i sent bob an email last night, and he was similarly concerned about the radial symmetry. i responded with more information, but i'm waiting to hear back. I think that it should be possible, though.

Well then, what do you guys think would be the best head for this item? It demands something elegant--the EJ/Muhle head would look fine, but those are harder to come by. There is the Old type (i have a New bull mastiff, and a Tech). So what do you guys think?

Don't worry - he's just busy finishing up my new brush.

If you've alreay got one of Bob's replated New heads on the bull mastiff, maybe you could have bob work it so that head fits both handles...

well, i think all of his handles fit all of the old gillette heads, anyway. if i wanted it to fit an EJ/Muhle head, it'd have to be a slight bit wider. As I said, I've got a tech head I could always fit it with.

Muhle use the slightly larger but same thread pitch (.010) M5 X 0.8 metric thread.
I just trade for a Goodfella the uses this thread, I retapped my BM handle with the metric tap and now the handle fits metric heads and I can still use it with all the Gillette 3 piece heads.

Have Bob set you up with a NEW head.

I've got a NEW head on my Bull Mastiff, else that would be my first choice. I'm wondering if the Muhle open-comb might not be a bad idea. Personally, I'd love to try out a NEW Improved head. I have the Tech head too. That's why I figured the Old-type might as well be the one.

Any other recs (for what will be a very special razor)? ps, im sending it to bob tomorrow.

i had an idea: could i take a chessman slant and have the threaded part cut down and rethreaded, making it into a normal 3 piece head? have it replated too.

You can't replate a chessman slant, they're made from zinc and they require special handling if not the plating solution will attack the zinc.
